Furlong Construction Company Owner, and Volunteer Robert J Furlong, 81 of Elkins Park, a retired construction company owner who was a devoted volunteer died Sunday, Feb. 3, of pneumonia in Holy Redeemer Hospital Robert began his career working as part of the survey crew for the City of Philadelphia. He was promoted to foreman and superintendent. He went on to become an owner of Miller and Brown Construction Company. After he retired, he became a project management consultant for Conduit Construction, McCloskey- Keating Company as well as Crossing Construction. He worked on many Philadelphia projects including Dilworthtown Plaza, City Line Pedestrian bridge, the subway at Eighth and Market Street, the Chestnut Street Bridge over Delaware Avenue, Patco Station Rehabilitation and The Link under The Reading Terminal. Mr. Furlong was a devoted Catholic who volunteered many hours. He was ran the Holy Angels Catholic Youth Organization for 4 years. This involved mentoring and guiding many youths through tough years, driving teams to sports games as well as cheering them on. More recently, he was a St. Cecilia Church Eucharistic Minister. He delivered weekly communion to cancer patients in Fox Chase Cancer Center. Mr. Furlong was an avid golfer and a great sports fan. He enjoyed travelling in the USA and Europe. He was a dedicated husband to Cass Furlong, father to Cathy McCrossan, Nell Sborlini and Mary Dunand. He has four grandchildren, Patrick McCrossan, Ryan McCrossan, Catie McCrossan and Charlie Dunand. Family and friends are invited to Bob's Life Celebration Friday after 7pm and Saturday after 9am from Dean/Geitner/Givnish of Fox Chase, 7900 Oxford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. 19111 and to participate in his Funeral Mass 10:30am from St. Cecilia Church. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory preferred to Alzheimers Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.
