Robert Gregory Gavell ObituaryRobert Gregory Gavell passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2025, at the age of 72.
Born near and raised in Bantam, CT, Robert was the son of the late Alice (Burke) and Francis Gavell. A gifted athlete, he earned numerous accolades in soccer, basketball, and track and field before going on to study Spanish at the University of Bridgeport. Following his studies, he joined the U.S.Army and graduated at the top of his class from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, CA, specializing in Korean. Robert's military service took him to South Korea, Colorado, and Arizona.
After returning to Connecticut, Robert began a distinguished 22-year career with the State Police, serving with dedication as the Resident State Trooper in North Canaan, Kent, and Washington. Though he retired in 2002, his passion for investigative work endured. He went on to continue his career as an insurance investigator with The Hartford and Zurich Insurance. Along the way, Robert touched countless lives and gathered a lifetime of stories through his work and his unwavering commitment to helping others.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Karen Gavell, four children, three grandchildren, faithful "Poodle", remaining siblings (he was predeceased by his sister Leona), and many friends.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Robert's life on April 21st at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home in Litchfield. Calling hours will be from 4-6 PM followed by a service.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chore Service, P.O. Box 522, Lakeville, CT 06039 or at choreservice.org.
