Robert Condit Gremley

1929 - 2023

Robert C. Gremley, age 93, of Skokie, passed away Friday, April 28, 2023 at home surrounded by family after a brief illness. Bob was born September 15, 1929 in Chicago to Byron and Margaret (Condit) Gremley. On May 12th, 1957 he married Mary Garofalos at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Middletown, OH. Bob was predeceased by his loving wife Mary and is survived by his three children, Robert, Paula and Andrew (Emma) and three grandchildren, Ben, Calvin and Aiden.

Bob spent his career as a commercial banking officer in the Chicago area at a number of both large and small banks. His proudest achievement was the development of community based lending at South Shore Bank, later ShoreBank. His efforts helped launch the Community Development Financial Institutions which continues to this day in the form of over 1,000 community banks and funds that support lending to minority and women owned businesses. Burial will be private. A celebration of his life will be held at the family home in Skokie on May 13th from noon until 4 pm.
