Robert Anthony Grier, Jr.

Robert Anthony Grier, Jr., 64, passed away peacefully in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on November 2, 1961, in Harlem, New York, Robert was a proud Bronxite through and through—even after moving out of state, he reminded folks daily that his heart (and his attitude) were still parked firmly on Bronx soil.

Robert, known interchangeably as Uncle Bobby, Anthony, Overton or simply Grier—depending on the decade of your friendship—spent many years at Twin Parks, where he collected lifelong friends the way some people collect keychains. Alongside his good friend Blue, he helped create Twin Parks Day, a celebration that still lives on, much like the stories people will continue telling about him whether you asked for them or not.

He worked tirelessly for the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority, where he gathered another group of friends who eventually became family. After 25 years of excellent service as a train conductor (and letting the whole world know he wore that uniform proudly), he retired and relocated to North Carolina with his beloved wife, Debra—who lovingly tolerated his sports commentary, volume level included.

Robert was known for his gruff yet affectionate charm: he could bark at you one minute and hug you the next. His love for music kept a soundtrack running in his life—often at a volume that made it impossible to pretend you didn’t hear him coming. His passion for sports was legendary. He cheered loudly for the Yankees and the Giants, but his inexplicable love for the Boston Celtics deeply confused everyone who knew him. To this day, no one has a solid explanation.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Debra; his sister, Robin; his children, Shanna, Robert III, Olivia, and Nikkole; his niece Chyrisse, her husband Chrissy (Krispeeee) and their children: Tyler, Tyreek, Krystina, S’Moia, Jaden, Elisa, Edwin III.; and his grandsons Justin and Amir. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Olive Grier, his brother Joseph Francis, and his sister Elisa Grier.

Robert will be remembered for his signature declaration—“I’m from the Bronx!”—along with his honesty, humor, and the music, laughter, and spirited debates he brought into every room. His presence was big, his love was real, and his legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
