Robert Paul Gruss, 73, of Irmo, South Carolina, died on January 16, 2026, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on May 28, 1952, he was the son of the late Bruno and Dorothy Gruss.
Robert was a veteran of the United States Army, where he received the National Defense Service Medal for his service during national emergencies. Following his service in the Army, he began a career in the banking profession where he retired as Vice President of Indirect Lending for BMO Harris Bank.
He was raised Catholic and continued practicing his faith throughout his life.
In his spare time, Robert enjoyed playing poker with friends, listening to the classic rock of the 1960's and 1970's, especially the Moody Blues, and watching military movies such as Blackhawk Down.
Robert was a loving father, was proud of his family, and was always willing to take care of anyone in need. He will be missed by his family.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Lauren Schubert Gruss; sons, Jason Norris and Kyle Norris; daughters, Jamie Norris and Traci Ronzio; and grandchildren, Emma Norris, Abby Norris, Conner Klein, and Sophia Klein.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by son, Robert Gruss Jr., and brother, Ron Gruss.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Friday, January 30, 2026, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
Graveside services with military honors will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, on Friday at 1PM.
Memories and messages may be left on his tribute wall. Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to serve the Gruss family.
