Robert Joseph Hagel, a devoted husband, father, and dedicated public servant, peacefully passed away on September 30, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on June 9, 1935, in Evansville, Indiana, Bob’s early years shaped in him a strong work ethic and a deep love for family and community.

He was a proud member of the first freshman class at Mater Dei High School in Evansville and went on to graduate from the University of Dayton with a degree in Civil Engineering, preparing him for a lifelong career in public service.

Bob lived and worked much of his life in St. Louis, Missouri, where he built a respected career in municipal leadership. He served as Director of Public Works for St. Louis County (1971–1979) and later as Executive Director of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (1983–1988). Relocating to Delray Beach, Florida, he continued his distinguished service as Executive Director of the South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Board (1991–2008). Colleagues and community members alike valued his steady leadership, fairness, and dedication to improving infrastructure that served millions of people.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bob gave generously of his time and talents through involvement in many professional, religious, and service organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, CBC High School, the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the Florida Water Environmental Federation Technical Seminar. He also lent his leadership to numerous charitable fundraising events. His dedication to community and faith was evident not only in his work but also in the countless ways he supported causes that improved the lives of others.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Betty Jean Hagel, and their two sons, Robert and Matthew. He also treasured his role as a grandfather to 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Irene Hagel; his brother, John Hagel; his three daughters, Jona Knickman, Maria Hagel, and Jane McCarthy; and his grandson, Scott Knickman. Each of them will forever be remembered with love and fondness.

A visitation in memory of Robert will be held on October 10, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Mass at 12:00 PM, at St. Alphonsus Liguori Roman Catholic Church, located at 1870 West Oak Street, Zionsville, Indiana, 46077.

Robert Joseph Hagel will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his generosity, hospitality, and the love he shared with his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mater Dei High School, 1300 Harmony Way, Evansville, IN 47720, in honor of Robert’s lifelong connection to his alma mater and his commitment to education and community.
