It is with an extremely heavy heart that we announce the passing of Robert Hamilton, known to some as Bobby and many others as "Ace". A lifelong resident of Philadelphia and very proud member of the mummer community. Bobby, 54, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at home with his wife, brothers, and sister by his side.
He was born in the Gray's Ferry section of Philadelphia and attended Saint Gabriel's grade school and graduated from Saint John Neumann in 1989. He maintained all of his childhood friendships from 30th Street throughout his life.
If you knew Bobby, you loved him. Whether strutting down Broad Street with his sax or lending his hand behind the scenes, he brought knowledge, heart, and a "just move forward" drive to everything he did. He was a true Mummer from the very beginning and a cornerstone of his club, he was the guy who could get anything for anyone.
Ace knew just about everyone in South Philly and he was easy to be friends with. He grew up in the South Philly String Band and later moved to his much beloved Fralinger String Band gaining many friends along the way. His work ethic went unmatched. He would spend numerous hours making sure the Fralinger club was running smoothly. Whether that was making sure the building was clean, cutting music, or putting in a "beer order" he wanted to help in anyway he could. He served on the board for both clubs in many different capacities.
Bobby spent the last 25 years working for IBEW Local 98, first on the Sound and Communication side of the union and then later inside as maintenance for apprentice training.
Bobby faced esophageal cancer for over seven years, and it was his very positive attitude that helped him through. He always had a kind word for every nurse or doctor that cared for him. At his appointments, discussing Bobby's disease came only after many talks of string bands, mummers, sax playing, as well as every Phillies game.
Above all, Bobby loved his family. He leaves behind his wife, Stefanie, the love of his life whom he married on "the 33rd of the month". He is survived by his sister, Patricia (Michael), his brother, Samuel, Jr. (Sherry), Thomas, and James, as well as his many very loved nieces, nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. Finally, Bobby leaves his constant companion and sidekick, Charlie Bing Hamilton, who brought him endless comfort and happiness.
A Viewing will be held, Monday, May 19, 2025 from the Rogers Funeral Home, Inc., 1426-30 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 after 8 AM until 12 PM with a short service to follow. Afterwards, a lunch will be held at the Fralinger String Band, 1903 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Bobby's name to Mummers Against Cancer, PO Box 37180, Philadelphia, PA 19147.
