Robert F. Hathorn, 77, of Dennison, was Promoted to Glory on Friday, November 18, 2022, at the Community Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia, after a period of declining health. Born November 3, 1945 in Wadsworth, Ohio, he was a son of the late William F. and Leota (Brown) Hathorn.
Robert was a 1963 graduate of East Liverpool High School who then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Malone College in 1969. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam War. Throughout much of his life, he was active with American Legion Post #491 in Dennison where he served as Post Commander and Adjutant. He was also a Past County Commander and District Commander. He retired from his 24-year career as a letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service on July 31, 2008. Robert was a longtime, faithful member of the Dover/New Philadelphia Salvation Army where he will be remembered for his work with their music ministry – playing his cornet.
On November 2, 1969, Robert married the former Linda Lauer with whom he enjoyed 47 years of marriage until her passing on June 11, 2017. Robert is survived by his siblings, all of whom are officers in The Salvation Army, Majors Richard and Stefanie Hathorn, Majors William and Brenda Hathorn, and Major Dr. Eva R. Geddes; sister-in-law, Major Alice Hathorn; several nieces and nephews; and his church family at The Salvation Army. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lyle Hathorn and Major David Hathorn, and brother-in-law, Major Wesley Geddes, as well as his wife and parents.
Captain Andrew Behr will officiate a 1:00 p.m. funeral on Tuesday, November 22, at the Dover/New Philadelphia Salvation Army where Robert's family will receive callers for two hours prior to the funeral. He will be interred beside his beloved wife at Uhrichsville's Union Cemetery following a military committal service by the Newcomerstown V.F.W. Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army.

Bob was faithful and loyal. He taught me to play the cornet. He was encouraging and didn´t make anyone feel bad if they struggled. He even had us play at the Dennison Railroad Station for some special event. He and Linda encouraged us as we left for training. They were always happy to see us when we visited our home corps. For the 125th Anniversary of the East Liverpool Corps, he came to play in a small ensemble during the open house. Thankful for their constant albeit quiet presence in my church life.
