Robert Allen Hawkins
Robert Allen Hawkins, a long-time Missoula, MT, dentist and outdoor enthusiast, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024. He was 97. He died at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 30, 1926 in Helena, MT, to Thomas Lee Hawkins, a Helena physician, and Harriet Laughlin Hawkins. Two other children included Janet, and Thomas. Bob grew up spending lots of time outdoors, skiing, hiking and water skiing around the Helena area and at the family cabin on Lindbergh Lake. He played football in high school. Bob graduated from the University of Montana and then dental school at the University of Washington.
On August 26, 1950, he married Millicent (Mickey) Clark from OK. They lived together on a houseboat in Lake Union in Seattle, while Bob finished dental school at the University of Washington, then in 1955 they moved to Missoula, where Bob set up a dental practice and they raised four children.
Bob was involved in numerous local organizations, actively supported the building of the Community Hospital and was a Member of the State Board of Dental Examiners from 1965-70. Bob was elected to the Missoula County High School Board of Trustees in 1970 and became its Chairman at the time when the critical decision was made to build the Seeley Swan High School.
He was a passionate photographer, loved to sail and enjoyed traveling. Bob loved to ski and stayed skiing into his 90s. He hiked in virtually every Montana mountain range, wilderness area, and national park; floated every major river, skied at every ski area large and small, sailed Flathead in their sloop, enjoyed outdoor outings and Christmas caroling with friends too numerous to list. Bob climbed most of Montana's highest peaks. They traveled back to Seattle to visit friends, to Europe with friends where they chartered sailboats and skied. Bob kept himself in shape through running with the Run For Lunch Bunch at the UM.
Survivors include his wife, Mickey Hawkins, Missoula; four children and their families: Thomas (Teresa) Hawkins (Marblehead, MA), Marianne (Phil) Prodehl (Bend, OR), Martha (Wink) Cleary (Missoula) and Jane (Marc) Katz (Missoula) along with eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition, his sister, Janet Downey (Kalispell) and family, and extended family from his brother, Thomas (d. 1978) in Idaho; his sister, Betty (d. 2023) was from Denver.
Bob will be buried in Pony, MT, and a Celebration of Life gathering is planned in Missoula in early August.

Dear Mickey and you four Hawkins kids. Our families go back so very many years.( Bob's father delivered me back in 1935 at St. Pete's in Helena.) Many memories of all our kids at Lewis and Clark and then on to Sentinel. We all shared many fun times together as families and then as couples. Bob will be missed by so many. Our prayers go out to all of you. With love, Jane and the rest of the Solberg clan.

My family and I were sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Hawkins. We recently had a small reunion at our family home, and we all fondly remembered Dr. Hawkins and whole Hawkins family.
The old neighborhood has changed in so many ways, but if you look and listen carefully, even still, you can see and hear the sights and echoes of that wonderful place we were so lucky to have called home.
Certainly, part of our luck was in having great neighbors like the Hawkins family, and one of the great memories was in seeing Dr. Hawkins drive home to his family, everyday, in his blue Chevy panel truck. Perhaps the memory of that daily ritual may seem insignificant, but in a quiet way, it always seemed to be one of the assurances that, for yet another day, all was well in the neighborhood, and a reminder of just how fortunate we were to grow up in a place made happy and safe by Dr.and Mrs. Hawkins, and all the other loving parents of the neighborhood.
All of that was so long ago, but still the memories remain. Dr. Hawkins was a very kind man, we remember him fondly, and to the Hawkins family, we share in your loss and send our very best regards.

I didn't know Bob well but I knew him well enough to know he was a dear, kind man with a big heart for his community. I always enjoyed our conversations and perspective. Deep sympathy to his family.

Bob Hawkins was a great mentor to me as a young dentist when I first moved to Missoula in 1973. He was a great example of professionalism and ethics. He always had a friendly smile whenever I ran into him, usually skiing with Mickey, or whatever. RIP Bob. You will be missed.
