Robert Hayes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tabor Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Brighton on Jan. 7, 2026.
Robert (Bob) Hayes was born May 1, 1949 in Golden, Colorado and died December 20, 2025 at the age of 76. He was the son of Clem Hayes and Virginia Vickers Hayes. Bob grew up in Golden, Colorado and graduated from Golden High School in 1967 where he earned the Coors Scholarship to Claremont McKenna College. At Claremont, Bob played football, basketball and baseball. In his senior year he was the captain of the football team in their undefeated league championship season. Bob returned to Colorado and earned his Master's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He taught math, the outdoor experiential education (Senior Seminar) and coached multiple sports for nearly 40 years at Golden High School. He was instrumental in developing the Experiential Education Program and the Junior Rafting Program at Golden High School. He was a lifetime supporter of education and athletics and earned the title of "Mr. Golden" in 2010 when the Golden High School gym was named, in his honor, The Robert G. Hayes Gym, for his dedication and years of service.

Bob was passionate about life and living it to the fullest. He loved to travel, raft, and garden in his beautiful yard. He was an educator and a coach to his core. Bob aka "Zeezo" was a magician and shared his tricks throughout his lifetime whenever and wherever he could. He was the ultimate family man and taught others by his outstanding example.

Bob is survived by his wife, Loana-Amber and their son, Augustus "Gus" Hayes; his children Becky Guy and Ryan Hayes; his step-children Amber English, Gavin, Dartanyan, and Mya Baker; grandchild Atticus Guy; step grandchildren Morgan, Hayden, and Bergen English, Aramis and baby girl (due in April) Kahananui-Baker; his siblings Sue Bauer, Dr. Greg Hayes, and Ginger Frahm. Bob was predeceased by his previous wife, Randa and their infant son, Sean Gibbons Hayes.

Bob loved his family with a ferocity that cannot be described in words. He deserves to be honored and revered and put on a pedestal. He deserves our utmost appreciation and respect and gratitude.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE will be held for Bob in the Robert G. Hayes Gym inside Golden High School on June 19, 2026 at 2PM. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Golden High School Alumni Association at P.O. Box 472, Golden, CO 80402. Or Golden High School Alumni Foundation Bob was president of the Alumni Association for many years. He LOVED Golden!!!

I am sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a teammate of mine on both the football and baseball teams at Claremont Mens College. His nickname was Old Blue, and he, along with his brother Red (Greg), were major contributors to the success of our championship teams. In recognition, Bob was memorialized with induction into the CMS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
I especially remember Bob for his dry wit, wry sense of humor. I extend my condolences to all of Bob's family. Peace be with you, Blue.

Condolences to Bob´s family and extended Golden, CO family. I had the pleasure and privilege to play football with Bob four years at CMC. He was a gifted athlete and leader. I was proud to be among those at his induction to the CMS Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.

I was fortunate to be a teammate of Bob´s on our 1970 Stag SCIAC Championship team. I loved playing competitive football with Bob (and Greg). Those days were very special.

I remember also seeing Bob play baseball and basketball. To play 3 sports at a school like CMC is very rare. Bob excelled at everything he did.
I am so glad our paths crossed and I am so very sad that he has passed.
