Robert W. Hindes, Jr.
February 14, 1951 - July 6, 2025
Robert W. "Bobby" Hindes Jr., the beloved patriarch of our family and larger-than-life outdoorsman, has gone hunting one last time.
Born on Valentine's Day, 1951, Bobby was the firstborn of Bob and Dorothy Lee (Crocker) Hindes. A lifelong resident of Charlotte, Texas, Bobby spent his youth stirring up ruckus with his beloved cousins and friends. Whether he was involved in boyhood antics or playing in the high school band, Bobby lived life with full-hearted joy and a spirit of adventure.
After attending Texas A&M in Junction, Bobby returned home to join the family tradition of farming and ranching. He brought tireless dedication and creative energy to the land, designing and building detailed lakes, dams, and islands across many South Texas ranches. He had a unique talent for shaping the land in ways both beautiful and practical.
Bobby was a passionate outdoorsman and avid hunter. His pursuits took him across North America, Canada, and South Africa, often in search of the elusive 200" mule deer. He spent countless nights hog hunting under South Texas skies, and in later years, took great pride in raising big white-tailed deer. Bobby cherished his time outdoors, but more than anything, he treasured the time he spent with his family.
In addition to his love of hunting, Bobby was a skilled and competitive marksman. He participated in shooting competitions and took pride in his precision, discipline, and craftsmanship. A lifelong hobby gunsmith, Bobby had a deep appreciation for firearms and often customized his own rifles and pistols with an expert's touch. His attention to detail and respect for the craft made him a trusted source of knowledge and skill in the shooting community.
Bobby also dedicated himself to serving his community as Fire Chief of the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department. He led with courage, commitment, and an unwavering sense of duty. Whether responding to emergencies, Bobby was always the first to step up and the last to seek recognition. His leadership helped shape the department into a vital and trusted part of the community-a legacy of service that continues to inspire.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Dorothy Hindes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Matthews, and his sons Colby (Tracy) Hindes and Clint (Christy) Hindes. He is also lovingly remembered by bonus sons, Roan (Lacy) and Creed West; grandchildren, Kaitlin Hindes, Cort and Cali Drew Hindes, Landry, Grady, and Peeler West; and great-grandson Warren Wilson.
He is also survived by his brother, Philip (Esperanza) Hindes, his sister, Melinda (Joe) Eustace, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Angela and Amy from Trinity Hospice for their dedicated care, as well as to Ana, Alma, Sonyja, and Janie, whose support and compassion were invaluable.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department, an organization close to Bobby's heart, by clicking the "Memorial Donation" button at the bottom of the obituary.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Texas (118 W. Oaklawn Road) on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at 10:00 AM. The burial service will follow at the Charlotte City Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather afterward for a reception at the First Baptist Church of Charlotte.
Serving as Pallbearers: Robert Bracken, Sam Callahan, John Clader, Joe Eustace, Charles Hahn, Jimmy Meyer, John Mueller, Glen Weir and Johnny Schrutka.
Bobby lived a life of adventure, hard work, and heartfelt connection. His presence was powerful, his laughter infectious, and his love for the land and his people was unmatched. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, joy, and generosity that will live on through the many lives he touched.
