He was the loving husband of Margaret, to whom he was married for 49 years before her untimely passing. They lived in Franklin Park, raising their children there under the many flight paths crossing over from O’Hare. Which explains why, when they retired to Florida together in 1998, they chose to live in a town that was an hour away from the airport, but then both lamented that we didn’t visit enough. After her death, to the chagrin of his children, he chose to stay in Spring Hill, because he “hates your winters.” He lived in the house they shared until January, 2023, when he transitioned to The Residence at Timber Pines assisted living, where he spent his remaining days under their wonderful care, and the family is eternally grateful for their devotion to him and the elderly.

Robert was the son of Marie and Jule Hoth and was the brother of Ronald Hoth. He was the uncle of Denise Hoth and Lisa Lucca, as well as the uncle of so many from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia that are far too numerous to list.

He met Margaret in Georgia when he was stationed at Fort Benning and she was employed by Delta airlines. They met through mutual friends. The girl from Virginia moved up north with him, but they visited Margaret’s family in Virginia every year and her family was as much his as hers because they welcomed the northerner in with open arms and southern hospitality.

Robert was the father of four children: Randall (Nancy) Hoth, Leanna (Richard) Griffith, Sandra (Douglas) Lawlyes, and Karen (Gary Dickinson) Hoth. He was a grandfather to Katherine Hoth, Cord and Andrew Dickinson, and Megan, Lauren and Benjamin Lawlyes. He always made sure to send a card and gift on their birthdays even though he was so far away.

Robert was a yardmaster for Soo Line Railroad and served in the United States Army. He was a fan of all Chicago sports teams (except for the White Sox!) and he was a very avid golfer. He didn’t graduate high school because he went into the Army, but received his GED and also took classes at Triton College.
