Robert Houle Obituary

, NH - Durham A True American Original Has Passed

Robert (Bob) Houle, 87 of Durham, passed Sunday after a series of unfortunate health conditions. His was a very active and adventurous life. He enjoyed traveling, tennis, golf, biking, and hiking in the White Mountains.  He also had a great love of theater and the arts. He would often quote Shakespeare, Frost or a quip from a classic film that would perfectly capture the moment be it in English or French.  Known for his tremendous charismatic smile and eloquent tongue, Bob loved to talk with anyone to share stories about the diverse tapestry of life. He rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy with his girlfriend Dorothy and would even tape the episodes if they had other plans. Bob was born June 9 1938 and attended West High School in Manchester. Immediately after graduating high school, he traveled to Los Angeles and lived for a while on the west coast. But his love was New England, and he returned and started his career in media at the Manchester Union Leader.  After graduating from the University of New Hampshire he worked in marketing for the New York Times. More entrepreneurial than employee, Bob left The Times and ran several advertising, publishing, and marketing businesses. Later in life he worked for The Hampton Beach Chamber of Commerce. His accomplishments there included organizing the first Sand Castle Contest and Seafood Festival. He truly enjoyed his walks and bike rides on the beach and loved listening to the music from the Continentals at the Seacoast Hampton Seashell. Bob liked playing cribbage or cards with his friends and his quick wit would always lead to plenty of laughter and awe. Yet, it was his love for humanity that was the underpinning of Bob's strength of character. He is survived by his son Richard Houle, his brother Joseph Houle, his sweetheart Dorothy, and a vast array of nieces, nephews and friends who loved him dearly. Services will be held in late March or early April next year. Condolences can be sent to Dorothy Dunn Straus at 33 Mill Pond Rd. Durham, NH 03824 Robert Houle
