Robert E. Huber, fondly known as Bob, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at the age of 95 after suffering a stroke. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 9, 1926.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Nancy Tetreaux Huber of Brooklyn, NY, as well as his nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, the late Ward and Alice (Tatro) Huber; his wife, Kathryn (Van Alstyne) Huber; his brother, Ward I. Huber; among his other loved ones.
Over the course of his long career, Bob pursued his interests in the production of radio and television. When he was in high school Bob wrote comedy sketches for Gene Carrol's popular radio show. After serving two years in the army at the end of WWII, Bob attended Case Western Reserve University, where he received a degree in Speech & Drama while he went back to work for Carroll part-time as a producer. In 1955, he began working for Storer broadcasting's CBS affiliate in Cleveland, WJW-TV, as a writer-producer. He was soon promoted to Public Service Director and then to Program Director. Over the course of his time at WJW, Bob received accolades for innovative programs such as the first televised live birth of a baby and documentaries on the Mercury space program. He won four local Emmy awards for his innovative original productions.
In 1978 he left WJW to start an animation company in Los Angeles with a former colleague, but L.A. didn't feel like home to Bob and Kay, so after a few years they returned to the East coast, where Bob joined Storer's cable television division where he held executive positions in Connecticut and New Jersey until he retired in 1989.
Once he retired, Bob became a regular featured writer for Classic Boating Magazine among other publications including the Rossmoor News. Bob loved boats. For many years he docked a power boat in various marinas along the shores of Lake Erie. In the early days he and his brother Ward took friends for joy rides on the lake, including Kay Van Alstyne, who he would eventually marry in 1955.
Another big part of Bob's life was music, which he played, arranged, and wrote throughout his life. He was a vocal coach and directed several vocal groups. Into his 90's he occasionally played keyboard with the Mayflower trio at Rossmoor, where he also co-wrote three musical comedies for the Rossmoor players and wrote numerous original plays. He was an active member of the Rossmoor Players for many years until he moved to Parker at Stonegate in 2021.
Bob was a genuinely kind and creative person. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A Memorial Service for Bob will be held at the Meeting House in Rossmoor, Monroe Township, NJ, on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.
