Robert "Bob" Joens

Robert "Bob" Joens, age 89, of Pocahontas, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Robert Edward Joens was born on May 24, 1936, on the home place located between Rolfe and Pocahontas, Iowa. He was the son of Herman and Jennie (Schoon) Joens. He attended country school through the eighth grade and went on to Pocahontas High School, graduating in 1954. Bob then began farming with his father. He also did carpentry and construction work. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years. On July 26, 1959, Bob was united in marriage to Marlene Truelsen in Mallard. The couple settled on the family farm near Pocahontas where they farmed and raised their family. Bob retired from farming in the early 2000's. He and Marlene continued to make their home on the farm.

Bob was a very active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. He served on various boards including, Farm Service, was Past President of Farm Bureau and was the longest serving President of the Federal Land Bank. In his younger years, Bob enjoyed competing in tractor pull competitions and even won at the Iowa State Fair. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tractors. Bob was also an accomplished woodworker, he made countless projects over the years for family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene, son, Dave Joens of Johnston; daughter, Sandy (Steve) Baskerville of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a sister, Berniece Knight of Humboldt.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Arlene Edge and Wilma Fisher and a grandson, Spenser Baskerville.
