Robert Edgar Johnson, 83, of Kernersville, North Carolina, passed away on December 28, 2025.
Robert was a devoted husband, loving father, and a man whose curiosity and intelligence shaped every part of his life. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Laverne Johnson; his daughter, Jennifer Johnson Luke; his son, James Kevin Johnson; and his sisters, Mary Denton and Delilah Knight.
Robert dedicated much of his career to engineering and technological innovation. He worked in the development of microchips used in electronics and early cell phones at RF Micro Devices, and later in quality engineering for Volvo. His work helped shape technologies that quietly but profoundly changed everyday life.
A lifelong passion for aviation defined Robert both professionally and personally. He held a private pilot’s license and spent his spare time delivering Beechcraft aircraft to buyers. He also loved building and flying radio-controlled airplanes and helicopters, combining his engineering skill with his love of flight. Aviation was more than a hobby—it was a calling.
Robert was a lifetime learner, continually expanding his knowledge simply for the joy of learning. He completed numerous college courses, including airframe and powerplant and avionics, driven not by necessity but by curiosity and passion. He also enjoyed traveling, meeting new people, and was famously able to fix just about anything that was broken.
Above all, Robert was a wonderful husband and father, steady, supportive, and endlessly capable. His family and those who knew him will remember his intelligence, kindness, quiet confidence, and generous spirit. The world has lost a truly wonderful man.
A private funeral service for invited family and guests will be held at Lowe Funeral Home in Burlington, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Wings of Rescue in Robert’s honor.
