Robert John King, known to all as Bob or BK, passed away peacefully early on April 19. It was the end of a battle with esophageal cancer.
Bob was a big guy, with a large presence and a generous spirit. He was born September 12, 1950, in Aurora, but grew up in Bloomington as the fifth of nine siblings in a boisterous, loving family. Bob attended local Catholic schools and Illinois State University, where he assembled an enthusiastic group of friends who enjoyed their time together, perhaps to excess.
Bob had a great, distinctive voice and when he moved to Chicago after school he worked first as a disc jockey on WMAQ and then as a DJ and program director for Q101-FM. He also worked on various commercial films and voiceovers.
Bob really established himself as a bartender. His personality fit the job and his interactions across the bar led to many friends, including a wife. Bob worked at several popular bars, especially Hillary's in the Water Tower Place when it was opened by the Levy family. Bob moved within the Levy organization to become beverage manager, helping to open places as diverse as large sports arenas and high-end restaurants. Bob was a popular visitor to brewers, distillers, vineyard and his annual favorite Aspen Food and Wine festival.
Bob was funny. He told a good joke, sometimes self-deprecating and often devastating. His banter as a scorekeeper of various contests is legendary among friends and family. He shared a birthday with his son Spencer and often arranged elaborate pranks to celebrate, including once getting a Rolls Royce and a case of Grey Poupon mustard so that Spencer could hand out jars to unsuspecting drivers, in a perfect restaging of a popular TV advertisement.
Bob was an avid gamer. A skilled card player and dice enthusiast, he cherished annual trips to Las Vegas with his brothers and nephews.
Bob was an inveterate reader. A friend to libraries, he was often found with a book. He was happy to discuss books and authors and to recommend selections. His favorite, over the years, remained "To Kill a Mockingbird".
Bob was a cyclist. After moving to Chicago, he organized a group of weekend riders called the Rogers Park Irregulars that entertained many friends. He participated in numerous long distance charity rides and popular RAGBRAI.
Bob was generous. His gifts, including his own elaborate wrapping, were highly anticipated. He gave blood regularly; every two months, until failing health prevented continuing.
Bob was a hero. In the summer of 1979, coming home late from work, Bob interrupted a villain's attack on an elderly couple, subduing the attacker, alerting the authorities and protecting the victims. The City of Chicago awarded Bob its highest civilian honor.
Bob was gracious and graceful in his final illness. He worried most about the burden he was being on others.
Bob is survived by his son Spencer, of Sarasota, FL, and his wife Leigh and daughter Claire, and his daughter Madeleine of Chicago. Bob's marriage to Melissa Oosterbaan ended in divorce. Bob also is survived by his sisters Carole Bunte of Oak Brook Terrace, Rose Costello of St. Paul, MN and Dorothy King and her husband John Protasiewicz of Cleveland Heights, OH, his brothers Daniel King and his wife Karen of Atlanta, GA, and Stephen and his wife Christy of Wilmette, and sister in laws Margaret King of Chicago and Dobie Edmunds of Cloverdale, CA, as well as a score of beloved nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Carol, his sister Margaret and his brothers Michael and Thomas.
Simply, Bob will be missed. His remains will be interred in a family plot in a private service. In Bob's memory, do something nice for another.

As kids Bob and I planned a rubber raft trip down the Mississippi . Somehow it never came to pass . Probably our parents killed the idea . In high school we each spent time recovering from football broken collarbones . He got a cast and I only got a brace .
Several of us ran into him in '05 or '07 at the masters and it was great to see him . His whole family was fun to be around and there are some wonderful memories of parties on Grove street when the parents were gone !

RIP my larger than life friend .

King B to all of us in the Levy restaurant family. Big tall King B with the deep, rich DJ voice. Always so personable and quick to laugh. Best bartender ever, non pareil. You were much loved by us all and by all of your happy customers. We will always remember you fondly. Thanks for your loyalty and for the great memories you provided us. We cherish them.

King B, as I knew him, was a bigger than life individual, a bartender without compare, but most of all a genuine friend. He was generous with conversation, knowledge, and always a good, hearty laugh.

Bob was among an incredibly loyal fraternity of early Levy restaurant "settlers". Without the passion and allegiance of team members like King B, Levy would never have achieved its prominence.

THANK YOU Bob for your years of friendship and laughter. You were, and always will be remembered as one of the real good guys!

BK was not shy. He was not small either. BK could command a room with his warm embracing baritone, broad physical gestures and sly smiles. A twinkle in his eye meant a great joke or story was in the offing. A great raconteur, BK never let anyone miss the punchline.
If you didn´t love being in his presence, you simply didn´t love life. He was a friend of mine.

Bob was the Beverage GOD at McCormick Place. We worked together and opened the food services, which became Levy Restaurants at McCormick Place.
I learned a great deal from Bob, as did many others. He was very well-loved by everyone. Rest in Peace.

Bob King (BK) had a creative side as well;

In 2007, He invented the Honey Duece, which is a cocktail sold at the U.S. Open Tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows, NY. It is comprised of lemonade, Grey Goose vodka, Chambord and a melon ball for the tennis fans. In 2023, they sold $9M of them at $22 each, This year, they plan to go over $10M. Feel free to fact check. He didn't get a dime of it. When I was there in 2009 and ordered one, I was immediately stung by a bee, Bob said he didn't have anything to do with it,

As part of a fund raiser, BK biked several hundred miles across Alaska. I think he shaved his head for it.

He loved to hitchhike! Remember it was the sixties! Stories galore!

He also loved to travel and loved the National Parks. We had a bet when we were 18, that the first one to travel all 50 states would owe the other guy a meal in France.

Oh well! I lost and bought at his favorite steakhouse (Ruth Chris') in downtown Chicago on his 60th birthday.

He also volunteered at the Chicago Food Bank. I will miss my biking, golfing, and racetrack buddy.

I'm proud to have been a friend!!!!!!!!

His essence was snappy patter, as mentioned here already, phrases from movies, noir detective and really all types literature, loved Emmy Lou Harris, made wonderful martinis, shy (not), used Professor and "Hello Temptation" as go-to generic greetings. Feared dogs, tolerated cars. Sometimes got "that look" that made him all the more charming. Multi faceted and, in his prime, quite the "Man about Town". A good and always interesting person. One of the best.

Bob and I got our tattoos together as part of the Roger's Park Irregular Bike club. I became 'Shoot' , He was 'Bolt' or was it Lightning? Many laughter filled hours were spent riding bikes, or dressing in vintage and quoting Dashielle Hammett. His memory always brings a smile.

Bob King! One of the most entertaining of people. As a friend of the family, it was always fun to visit their house on Grove Street in Bloomington. Everyone in the family was bright, well read and interesting in everything.

A note, Bob at one time suggested he should be call Bert. As I recall, the last time I spoke with him, at ISU, he was dropping out to work on term papers for other students. (Don't tell the administration, but I'm sure they were works of art).

I was friends with the middle kids, Tom was a high school friend of my older brothers, Mike was my age whom I met when the family first moved to Bloomington, at Bloomington JHS. Margaret a star crossed friend, and Bob, the most witty of all.

I think of them fondly, along with all of a good group of people, most of whom have past. I wish we could meet one more time...

I spent lots of time with Bob-so many memories, yes some a little hazy, but still full of fun. I last saw Bob in Aspen a few years back, and Bob was Bob. I am sure that wherever Bob is, his larger than life" presence will make it a better place. RIP Bob, and I am sure you will thrive on the other side.

"Name your poison, Governor." No one threw down the snappy patter like BK. He practically invented it, and he pulled it off the way no one else could. A set of velvet pipes and a heart as big as all outdoors, he was one of the real ones. Let´s all pour one out for Bob. May his memory be a blessing.

I was fortunate enough to work many years with Bob at Levy and also to call him my friend. He had a heart of gold and alway brought a smile to my face as well as many others. We called each other "partner" and he even nicknamed me "Silver Bill" after a night counting liquor inventory near the Christmas holiday and I asked him how many silver Bacardi rums there were and he broke into a chorus of "Silver Bells" only replacing bells with Bill. He was hoot. I will miss him. Cheers my friend.

It was an honor and privilege to have known Bob King. His larger than life persona and great sense of humor never failed to raise, inspire or just simply bring about a smile to everyone that he interacted with. I will miss you Bob. Rest in Peace.

Bob was my leading guy in our senior class play at CCHS in Bloomington IL. He was a jokester and very popular as someone who added the party dimension to everything. My sympathies to his family. His obituary is a wonderful tribute to a larger than life personality.
