Robert James Layburn, Sr., 72, of Salisbury, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 after a period of declining health.
Bob was born April 20, 1949 in San Pedro, CA. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from '66-'72, and in Vietnam from '69-'70 with his father and brother. He also served on the VA Honor Guard. He started his career in Shipping and Receiving as a Supply Clerk in the USMC and retired as a Storeroom Supervisor after 17 years with Piedmont Natural Gas. Bob used to sing bass in the Salisbury Rowan Choral Society. He was also a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Salisbury, where he will be remembered for narrating the annual Christmas play. He enjoyed going to the Outer Banks and fishing and was affectionately known as "Sweet Daddy Bob." He was such a prankster and jokester. His road dawg was the late, Jim Baucom.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 50 years, Carolyn Carter Layburn; sons, Spence (Teasha) Carpenter and Robert Jr.; daughter, Melanie (Marc) Jacobs; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Donnie (Ellie) Layburn; sister, Nancy Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews; and fur-baby, Buddy (who was always hot on Bob's heels).
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord. The funeral service in celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Friendship Baptist Church, 100 Porter Rd, Salisbury, officiated by Rev. Jason Pierce. Bob will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 pm at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury.
