Robert Francis Leahy, aged 90 years, of Sandwich, Massachusetts and
Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully in the morning on December 2, 2025.
Robert was born on March 11, 1935 to John Francis Leahy and Ina Mildred (Hildreth) Leahy in
Utica, New York. As a boy, he was known as Franny to his family and childhood friends. After high school he joined the ROTC program for the Navy and went on to study Civil Engineering at Tufts University, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Ursula Marietta (Dittami) Leahy. His college friends called him Bob, the name he used for the rest of his life.
After graduating, he and Ursula were married on June 6, 1958 and together they traveled to the Canal Zone in Panama, where he completed his service and was honorably discharged. The young couple returned to the United States with their first daughter, Cathlin Elizabeth. The family settled in Massachusetts where they had two more daughters, Marietta Ina and Susan Marie. When his daughters were young, he saved all his vacation time and would take off an entire month to be with his family, having wonderful adventures and creating lasting memories.
Bob was hired by Avco to work in its aerospace division. After many years with Avco, Bob went to work for Stone and Webster, where he was a key member of the design team and head estimating engineer for many major power plants throughout the United States.
In 1997, Bob retired and began his career as a Snowbird, traveling with Ursula to Vero Beach in the winter and returning to the family home for the summer months. He enjoyed singing with the Cape Cod Chorale and the Dickens Carolers when up north and the Silver Tones and the Treasure Coast Chorale while in Florida. In later years, he enjoyed laying in his recliner on the sun porch, basking in the Florida warmth while watching the birds in the pond across the street.
Robert Francis Leahy was predeceased by his parents, aunts and uncles, and his nephew, Robert Michael Leahy. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ursula Marietta (Dittami) Leahy, his brother Richard Douglas Leahy and wife Phyllis (Colacicco) Leahy, three daughters, Cathlin Elizabeth (Leahy) Campbell, Marietta Ina (Leahy) Cormier, and Susan Marie (Leahy) Brownell, along with their spouses, Casey Campbell, David Cormier, and Chalmer Brownell, his nephew
