Robert Edgar Long

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Edgar Long, age 78, who departed this life on December 1, 2025. Born on December 16, 1946, in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Edgar and Winifred Long, Robert was a cherished son, devoted husband, and loving father. He spent many of his formative years in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where he graduated from Dartmouth High School.

In pursuit of service to his country, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving with honor and dedication. He continued to contribute to his nation as a member of the Army Reserve Corps of Engineers, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Robert was proud of his military service, which instilled in him a commitment to loyalty and hard work.

Following his military service, Robert joined the Local 385 and later retired from P.J. Keating in Acushnet, Massachusetts. He spent his life as a laborer in the safety control industry, embodying the values of diligence and craftsmanship.

On June 8, 1996, Robert married his beloved wife, Deborah A. Long, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Together, they created a loving home filled with warmth and laughter. Robert was the devoted father of his son, Robert W. Long (Stacie) of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and daughters Laurie, Sherri, and Debra, all of Massachusetts. He cherished his role as a stepfather to Brad Goodman of Roanoke, Virginia, and Chad Goodman of Norton, Massachusetts.

In addition to his children, Robert found great joy in his relationship with his beloved pups, Gibbs and McGee, and he took immense pride in his grandchildren: Meghan A. Long, Gillian N. Long, Anthony and Sara Tantillo, Gabriel and Lawrence Rendek, Nicholas, Jake, and Bethany St. Gelais, and Dylan and Clark Goodman, all of Massachusetts. His legacy of love will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.

Known for his culinary talents, Robert loved cooking for family and friends, often gathering loved ones around the table to share stories and laughter. He enjoyed traveling the country by motor home and dedicating time to fixing things, embodying a spirit of perseverance and ingenuity.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on January 2, 2026, at New Day Christian Church.  A graveside service will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery on January 9, 2026, at 12:30 pm, allowing family and friends to come together in remembrance of a life well-lived. Robert's memory will forever be cherished, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
