Robert Bruce Marshall

Robert Bruce Marshall, Jr., 78, passed away on February 28 in his home on Distant Island where he has lived for the past 31 years. He died after a battle with cancer.
Bruce was born in Florence, SC because his parent's home of Marion did not have a hospital. He was the son of the late Teeny and Barney Marshall and brother of the late Alison White.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace Marshall, his daughter Suzanne Marshall, grandchildren Peter Adam Burvenich and Grace Burvenich, as well as two beloved nieces Alison and Susan and their families, and his four-legged son Bentley Marshall.
He was a graduate of University of South Carolina undergraduate and law school. He came to Beaufort in 1973 to practice law, was the first public defender of Beaufort County and retired as a sole practitioner in 2016. He had practiced with several lawyers with whom he became lifelong friends. He rarely sent a bill to a police officer or a schoolteacher and was a fierce defender for many. He had a deep love for Grace, Suzanne, Adam and Grace, many friends, and also the South Carolina Gamecocks. He and Grace had travelled extensively and enjoyed seeing the world.
A Celebration of Bruce's life will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025 from 2-4pm at the Yacht and Sailing Club, 30 Yacht Club Drive, Lady's Island, SC 29907.
