Mr. R.L. Mathis, 83, of Fairmount, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at AdventHealth Gordon after six weeks of declining health.
Mr. Mathis was born in Gilmer County, Georgia on May 4, 1940, the son of the late Robert Lane Mathis and Annie Lee Mulkey Mathis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Crowe Mathis, in 2020; and by two brothers, Gene and Clyde Mathis.
Before retirement, he was self-employed in construction and an avid Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs fan. He loved his family and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Fairmount Methodist Church and a veteran, having served in the Georgia National Guard.
Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Price and her husband Alan; son, Lee Mathis and his wife Connie; grandchildren, Nick (Molli) Price, Madison (Josh) Bowling, Levi Mathis, Braden Mathis, Melissa (Jake) Free, Jessica (George) Hammes and Halle Williams; great-grandchildren, Lane Cooper Price, Elliot Price, Harper Free, Henry Free and the Bowling twins; sisters, Sandra Mosley and Linda Foster and her husband Dave; brother, Terry Mathis and his wife Linda along with nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services for Mr. R.L. Mathis will be conducted Friday, January 26th at 3:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Johnson Cemetery at Fairmount. Pallbearers serving will include Lamar Johnson, Alan Price, Nick Price, Levi Mathis, Braden Mathis, and Kelly Mathis. Honorary pallbearers will include Josh Bowling and Calvin Watts.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening between the hours of 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home, 711 College Street, Calhoun, GA 30701.
