Robert Mattei Obituary

Robert Mattei
Robert John Mattei, 74, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, in Hospice Care at Yale New Haven Hospital, Connecticut, the city where he was born.
Born on September 29, 1951, in New Haven to Angelo "Bushy" Mattei and Mary Mattei Ricciuti, Robert was raised in a home rooted in love. He attended St. Aedan's Catholic School and graduated from Hill House High School before continuing his education at the University of New Haven.
Robert dedicated over three decades of his professional life as a production associate at The Marlin Firearms Company. His commitment to hard work and quiet diligence earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
A man of deep Catholic faith, Robert lived each day guided by compassion, humility, and the Golden Rule. He was known for his kind and gentle spirit, always choosing to see the good in others. His unwavering devotion to family was evident in every aspect of his life.
Robert found immense joy in spending time with his loved ones. He dearly loved his daughters Christine Mattei Lockwood and Catherine Marie Mattei. The bond he shared with Christine and her husband Tommy brought him great comfort and pride. Though preceded in death by Catherine, her memory remained ever-present in his heart.
He cherished his role as a grandfather to Luke Robert Anderson and took great delight in the lives of his step-grandchildren Morgan Gee (Nathaniel), and T.J. Lockwood and his fiancée (Danielle). His sister Michele Marek and her husband Ray held a special place in his heart, as did his niece Alexis Mittelmann (Matthew and Zoey)and nephew Raymond Marek III (Kyle Oglesbee).
Outside of work and family, Robert enjoyed fishing, whistling tunes that reflected his lifelong love of music, listening to favorite songs that stirred memories old and new, and practicing his faith with quiet devotion. Whether casting a line or sharing a laugh with family members around the table, he found beauty in life's simple pleasures.
Robert will be remembered not only for what he did but for who he was-a man whose warmth radiated through every interaction; whose humility inspired those around him; whose steadfast love for family anchored generations; whose faith illuminated even the darkest days.
May Robert John Mattei's memory bring peace to all who knew him and continue to inspire kindness for years to come.

RIP my friend..
I´ll miss our frequent phone conversations...always positive regardless of situation, and always grateful to God for his grace and mercies...
Looking forward to catching up with you again in heaven-and hearing how many of the deep philosophical and theological questions we pondered together over the years you have found answers to!
God bless

I will always be grateful to Bobby for instilling in me the value of working to achieve "The Impossible Dream" which his life and faith exemplified. From his early days growing up in New Haven, being the Drum Major of the Emerald Cadets, and raising a beautiful family, Bobby always strove to do his best despite many challenges, and I can see from reading this site, that he shared this special part of him with many others. I thank him for being a wonderful brother to me, a dedicated son to our parents, a loving father and grandfather and so much more. I miss you Bob but your spirit lives on and I believe you truly are in a better place now with Cathy by your side and the rest of us celebrating your life until it is our time to join you. Love, Michele.

For my dearest friend bobby, where do I begin? My life is blessed to call you my friend, 'brother' mentor and confident. From school ways to 'marching days', and 'oh-so-many double dates' with our girlfriends, these memories I will never forget. Mostly I'll never forget you asking me to be Best Man at your Wedding! I've taken, honored and cherished this 'gift' my entire life. Peace to you and Michele, love, gabe, nyc 1/12/26

Bobby was the most decent man I´ve ever known. I will miss our Monday phone calls and your birthday visits. Bobby would always bring a box of wine on my birthday, while we would sit and reminisce our childhood memories of growing up together in Westville. Bobby, you were an amazing man... Very kind, caring and unforgettable! You were a very religious and wonderful person! My family holds so many memories- from your kindness to your laughter- of you and we will always cherish them, as we will always cherish you and our friendship! You were not just a dear friend, but you were family. As Corey always called you, you were our Brother Bobby! The kids will always remember our dinners at Tolli's and all your "yeah, yeah, yeahs!" Corey and I will always remember your advice and your famous jokes, especially "going to the roof with the hose and watering the grass to trick it to thinking it's raining!" We know you are with your daughter and the "illustrious " Sage as well as Buddy, and the many others you always kept in your heart and prayers... You, Bobby, will forever be missed and loved by The Lippolis Family and you will forever hold a spot in our hearts... We know you are with the Lord now and for infinity and may you now have the peace you so deserve. We will miss you always, Brother Bob. God and Peace be with you!

I grew up next door to Bobby, Michele, Bushy and Mary. From first grade through college and beyond until our group of seven kids on Glen View Terrace and Lawncrest Road went separate ways, Bobby was the oldest among us and really the leader. Stickball and touch football in the street. Kite flying and butterfly catching, Little League baseball. Snow forts and snow fights. I cannot separate my growing up from Bobby and memories of so many fun times. A real anchor for me. I cannot improve upon the wonderful tribute to him here, but I can confirm all of it. I am very sad. Rest in eternal piece, Bobby.
