Robert Joseph McCarroll, 93, passed away December 1, 2025 at The Peaks Assisted Living Center in Lafayette, CO.
Bob was born March 19, 1932 in NJ to Archibald and Marie McCarroll (Kloss). He grew up in East Orange, attending East Orange High School. He served 4 years in the US Air Force, stationed in Florida, Mississippi, and Germany. He married Ann Dolores Murray on Feb. 2, 1957 in Newark, NJ, and together they raised four children.
After his service, he attended Newark College of Engineering and received a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Western Electric in Holmdel, NJ, then transferred to Boulder, CO in 1969 with his family and continued his career with Bell Labs and AT&T. His work focused on PBX switchboards, installing and troubleshooting them all over the United States and a few in Europe.
After retiring from AT&T, he took classes at CU Boulder and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, earning a certificate in Paleontology. He became a regular volunteer at the Musuem, logging more than 10,000 hours over more than 20 years! He went on archaeological digs in Colorado, South Dakota, and Utah, finding and casting dinosaur fossils. He then spent meticulous hours with dental picks and brushes, cleaning and preserving the fossils back at the Museum’s fossil lab. He also visited elementary school classrooms, where he loved to share his dinosaur knowledge. Many of his volunteer hours were spent on the creation of the “Prehistoric Journey” exhibit, still on display at the DMNS.
Bob is survived by 3 children. Robert M. (Merce Crosas Navarro) of Spain, Patricia (Charles) Schonberger, Westminster, CO and Paul McCarroll, Firestone, CO. One son, John, passed in 2007. He is also survived by two special “daughters” Cindee McCarroll of Durham, NC and Zee McCarroll of Longmont, CO.
Surviving grandchildren are Gregory (Stephanie) Schonberger, of Menifee, CA, Beth (Kyle) Boyd, of Denver, Gavin McCarroll of Colorado Springs, Colleen (Jordi Pena) McCarroll of Spain, Meghan (Barry Nadeau) McCarroll of Broomfield, CO. Erin (Robert Mitchell) McCarroll, Garner, NC, Jordan (Phillip) Howard, Benson, NC. Also step-grandchildren Alohi Holing of Redmond, WA, and Eli Munn of Cambridge, MA.
