Robert "Bob" McClure passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, his 98th birthday, following complications from a recent hip fracture. He was a resident of
South Riding, Virginia, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Bob was born on January 14, 1928, in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Leonard McClure and Lola Hoy. Leonard farmed and worked various jobs during the Great Depression, while Lola worked as a schoolteacher before becoming a homemaker. Bob was the fourth of six children, growing up in Dibble, Oklahoma, during a time of hardship that shaped his character for life. He learned early the value of hard work, gratitude, and perseverance. Despite the challenges, he fondly remembered adventures with his brothers, milking the cows, and helping raise crops.
Education was important to Bob, and he loved to tell the story that once he was old enough to drive, he became the school bus driver for his small country school. He also quipped about earning the title of class valedictorian of his graduating class of five. After graduating high school in 1945, Bob served in the U.S. Army with the 712th Engineer Depot Company at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from 1945 to 1947.
Following his military service, Bob attended the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Oklahoma State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1952. He began his career as a County Agriculture Agent in Paris, Texas. Seeking further advancement, he earned a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University in 1959. Bob later worked in Community Relations and Marketing for the Neuhoff Meat Packing Company in Dallas, a job that cured him of any desire for hot dogs for the rest of his life.
While living in Dallas, Bob attended Gaston Avenue Baptist Church, where he met Hazeldean "Deanie" Hibbard, head of pediatric nursing at Baylor Medical Center. They were married on May 12, 1962, and shared 53 years of marriage until Deanie's passing. In 1964, Bob began a career as a Statistician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with assignments in Austin, Texas, Charleston, West Virginia, and finally Washington, D.C. When transferred to D.C. in 1973, the family settled in
Fairfax, Virginia, where Bob and Deanie continued to raise their three children and spent their retirement years.
Bob was a devoted member of Ox Hill Baptist Church for more than 50 years, serving faithfully in numerous roles. In retirement, he cherished time with family and was deeply involved in the lives of his nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Bob's faith in Jesus Christ was central to his life and guided his actions. He lived quietly, served generously, and treated everyone with kindness and respect. A lifelong learner, Bob often returned from the library with bags of books on topics ranging from investing and nutrition to history, home repair, the human brain, block chain technology and breadmaking. He put his knowledge to use by maintaining family vehicles, tackling household repairs, and proudly maintaining his lawn until age 90. He believed strongly in caring for his body through good nutrition and exercise, jogging regularly into his mid-eighties before transitioning to brisk walks.
Bob is survived by his son Alan McClure and wife Lynn of
South Riding, Virginia; daughter Lori Frise and husband Barry of Martinsville, Virginia; and son Dennis McClure and wife Bhabes of
South Riding, Virginia. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Lauren Romero and husband Steve, Morgan Blancas and husband Josh, Ashley Hart and husband Cory, Allison McClure, Sierra McClure, Hannah Collins and husband Will, Nick McClure, T.J. McClure and wife Abby, and Miriam McClure, as well as seven great grandchildren, Beau Blancas, Briggs Blancas, Amberly Hart, Beckham Hart, Brewer Blancas, Grady Hart and Adrian Romero.
A memorial service will be held on February 5, 2026, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home followed by interment at Fairfax Memorial Park and a reception in the Mason Hospitality Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (WFCM), where both Bob and Deanie volunteered for many years. https://www.wfcmva.org/donate
