Robert A. McNeil

Robert Alexander "Uncle Bob" McNeil was born on February 12, 1936, to Kathleen Eleanor (Keifer) and Francis Milo McNeil. He grew up in New Hyde Park, Long Island, alongside his brothers John Michael (late, of Bridgewater, NJ) and Daniel Warren (of New Fairfield, CT). A graduate of Sewanaka High School, Bob went on to serve in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, where he trained as a medic. Bob spent much of his career as a manager with Nynex Telephone Company before retiring to Southbury, Connecticut, where he enjoyed being closer to family. For more than 20 years, he poured his energy and good humor into volunteering at the Safe Haven Thrift Shop, where friends and regulars affectionately knew him as Uncle Bob, or "UB." An iconic character of the Thrift Shop, he was often found completing jigsaw puzzles, savoring coffee and donuts, offering sage advice and chatting with his fellow volunteers. Uncle Bob loved traveling and exploring the beauty of America's National Parks. He always drove an American-made car and loved listening to the Great American Songbook and John Philip Sousa. He enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and never missed a family gathering. He had a playful sense of humor that brightened the lives of those around him. Bob is survived by his brother Dan, along with four nieces and a nephew, who will deeply miss his wit, generosity, mischief, and unwavering love for family. He passed away at the age of 89, following complications from a broken hip. The family will be hosting a memorial gathering at the Safe Haven Thrift Shop on Wednesday October 1st, from 5pm to 6pm.
