Robert Melanson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nichols Funeral Home - Wilmington on Mar. 9, 2026.
Robert H. Melanson, fondly known as "Bob" to family and friends, age 86, of Billerica, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, with his loving family by his side.

Bob was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on January 2, 1940, the cherished son of the late Albert and Marie (Richard) Melanson. He was raised and educated in Somerville, where he was active in the Boy Scouts as a young man and later graduated from Somerville Trade School.

On December 29, 1961, Bob proudly enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served aboard the USS Independence and dedicated himself to his country with honor. In April of 1966, he was honorably discharged from active duty, though he continued his service in the Navy Reserves.

On October 25, 1970, Bob married his beloved "Sweetheart," Madeline Carroll. In November of 1973, the couple settled in Billerica, where they lovingly raised their daughter Jill, who was truly his pride and joy. Together they became devoted parishioners of St. Dorothy's Church in Wilmington, where they faithfully practiced their Catholic faith.

Bob was employed by the Boston Edison Company for more than 30 years. Known for his strong work ethic and willingness to learn, he worked in various departments throughout the company and built many lasting friendships with his coworkers. After retiring from Boston Edison, Bob continued serving others by working for the Town of Wilmington driving the mini buses. His warm personality and kindness made him a wonderful employee and someone passengers always enjoyed seeing.

Bob had many passions in life. He was an avid tennis player who loved friendly competition and remained active in the sport until the age of 81. Bob and Madeline also enjoyed candlepin bowling in their couples league. He also had a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors, enjoying bird watching and creating beautiful gardens throughout his yard. Bob loved puttering around the house, fixing things, and working on projects. In his spare time, he treasured moments spent with family and friends and never passed up the chance for a good card game. Bob also looked forward to spending his "downtime" at the family home on Cape Cod for over 30 years.

Bob will be fondly remembered as a wonderful man with a great personality, always willing to help others. His unconditional love and devotion to his family and friends will never be forgotten. He will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Bob was the beloved husband of Madeline Melanson of Billerica, devoted father of Jill Melanson of Quincy, dear brother of Frank Melanson of San Francisco, CA and the late Norman Melanson and his late wife Jean. Bob was also a special uncle of his niece Robin Melanson and his nephew and Godson the late Andrew Melanson. He is further survived by many dear friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Wednesday, March 11th from 4:30–7:30 p.m. All are welcome to gather at the Funeral Home on Thursday, March 12th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Dorothy's Church, Main St. (Rte. 38), Wilmington, MA, at 10:30 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, Massachusetts.
