It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Robert Howard Michels (known to family and friends as Bob), who passed away on February 10, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on April 12, 1937, in New York, NY, Bob made his way through life with a deep love for his family, a strong work ethic, a quick wit and steadfast devotion to his country.

Bob proudly served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960, assigned to the radar division aboard the U.S.S. Bennington. During his service, Bob demonstrated exceptional professionalism and leadership. He was promoted to Radarman Second Class and entrusted with supervisory authority over many men. His written assignments consistently received high marks, and he soon advanced to the rate of Petty Officer. Bob earned the respect of both his peers and subordinates through his sound judgment and extensive professional knowledge, enjoying an equal measure of respect and personal popularity throughout his service.

Following his military service, Bob built a long and dedicated career in the news printing industry as a pressman. He worked at The Miami Herald, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. The two later continued their careers together at The Charlotte Observer, sharing both their professional lives and a lasting partnership that defined their family.

Baseball was one of Bob’s lifelong passions. He played at Academy of Richmond County High School, where he was a member of their championship team and was later honored with induction into the Academy of Richmond County High School Hall of Fame. Bob later passed his deep love of the game on to his son, coaching his Little League teams through high school. His time on the field as a coach created lasting memories and taught lessons of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance that extended far beyond baseball.

Outside of the ballpark, Bob found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a lifelong love for the water and cherished traveling to the Florida Keys with his family, where he could often be found lobstering, fishing, and diving from sunup to sundown. He also loved the game of golf and remained active well into his later years, working at the golf club into his 80’s—a testament to his dedication, enduring work ethic, and his love for the game.

Bob was also known for his warm sense of humor and quick wit. He had a way of bringing laughter into everyday moments, often lightening the mood with a well-timed joke or a knowing smile. His humor, kindness, and easygoing nature made him a joy to be around and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Bob is survived by his loving spouse, Barbara Michels; his sons, Mark Michels and Sean Wakefield; his daughter, Kim Michels; his daughters-in-law, Sara Wakefield, and Missy Michels; and his cherished grandchildren, Rob, Mary, Helen, Parker, Sophia, Jaxon, and Colton. Bob will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Anna Michels and his sister, Muriel.
