Robert H. "Bob" Millard, Jr., a distinguished retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Army and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, in
Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 77. Born on May 25, 1948, in Yakima, Washington, Bob spent his formative years growing up in Canton, Ohio, where he quickly became known for his remarkable spirit and dedication.
A proud graduate of Glenwood High School in the class of 1966, Bob excelled both academically and athletically, serving as a member of the National Honor Society and earning accolades as an All-County football player, playing both guard and linebacker. Bob would go on to earn his Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1970. His pursuit of excellence continued as he earned a Master's degree in Physical Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1979, laying the foundation for a life characterized by leadership and service.
Bob's unwavering commitment to his country was exemplified by his 22-year career in the U.S. Army. During his military tenure, he completed two esteemed tours-one in South Korea and another in Europe-demonstrating courage and dedication in challenging environments. Following his military retirement, Bob continued to serve his country as a private contractor with the U.S. government, undertaking significant work in Dubai and at the Pentagon.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob held a fervent passion for sports. A devoted supporter of the New York Yankees, Cleveland Browns, and all United States Army West Point Athletics, he found joy in both watching and actively participating in the world of sports. Bob would use his Master's degree to become a faculty member at West Point cherishing his time serving twice with the athletics department at West Point, where he combined his love for sports with his dedication to mentorship and teamwork.
Bob's personal life was marked by love and devotion to his family. He was deeply in love with his wife of 54 years, Cindy, who stood by his side throughout his journey. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Bob also held close the memory of his late daughter, Michelle Bunch, whose spirit remained a guiding light in his life.
As an avid golfer and member of the Kiln Creek Golf and Country Club, Bob spent many joyful hours on the greens, cultivating friendships and relishing the camaraderie of fellow golf enthusiasts. His commitment to personal growth and community support was further reflected in his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous, where he both gave and received invaluable support.
Bob leaves behind a legacy of love and integrity, survived by his devoted wife, Cynthia Millard; his siblings, Barbara Anne Stone (Archie), William J. Millard, and Donald A. Millard; his sister-in-law, Jeanette Pratt, his brother-in-law, Richard Pratt (Anne); his nieces, Heather Iaderosa (Giuseppe), Amie Rednick, Alta Abel (John), Heidi Millard, Abbey Pratt, and Melissa Pratt- Jimenez; his nephews, Robert Stone, Jason and Justin Millard, Anthony and Brooks Pratt as well as a host of extended loving family members and dear friends.
Preceded in death by his beloved daughter Michelle Bunch and his cherished parents, Robert H. Millard, Sr. and Elizabeth Millard (Gibbs), and his brother-in-law Robert Pratt. Bob's impact on those who knew him remains indelible. His life was a testament to perseverance, love, and unwavering dedication to family and country. Though he will be dearly missed, his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date to be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home- Denbigh located in
Newport News, VA.
