Robert Moffitt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Toale Brothers Funeral Home & Crematory - Colonial Chapel - Sarasota on Feb. 17, 2026.
Some people live life quietly.

Bob lived it out loud - in melody, in laughter, and in love.

Born in Parma, Ohio, Bob discovered early that music was not just something he played - it was who he was. For more than 60 years, his saxophone was his voice, his joy, and his gift to the world. From Cleveland to Florida, from concert stages to neighborhood gatherings, Bob's music brought people together.

During his service in Vietnam, Bob was chosen as a Combat Entertainer and lead saxophonist for the Command Military Touring shows. As part of the six-man band The Shades of Jade, he traveled to remote outposts, bringing comfort, energy, and a reminder of home to American troops. Even in the most difficult places, Bob shared the healing power of music.

Teaching was another expression of his generous heart. Bob worked with students of all ages - from preschool children to senior citizens - believing that music belonged to everyone. He founded Beginning Steps to Music, his own preschool music program, inspiring young hearts to find rhythm and confidence.

In 1996, Bob and his family moved to the newly formed community of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, as part of its first 100 residents. Over the next 30 years, he and his family became a familiar and beloved presence. Most recently, you could find him on Thursday evenings at Remy's, playing his electronic sax alongside fellow musicians and friends - still doing what he loved most.

But beyond the music, Bob's greatest pride was his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Debra; his son Shannon (Julie); his daughter Jessica (Bryan); grandsons Dillon and Brady; granddaughter Addison (Nick); and great-granddaughter Logan. His love for them was constant and unwavering.

Bob's legacy is not only in the notes he played, but in the lives he touched - the students he encouraged, the friends he entertained, the soldiers he uplifted, and the family he cherished.

The music may pause, but the melody lives on.
