Robert John Nicholas, 77 years of Spring Hill, Fla passed away, February 8, 2023. He was born in
Greenport, NY and came here 26 years ago from California, MD. He is predeceased by Sandy Nicholas
his spouse and Jeff Brown his step-son. Survived by his partner, Janice Tolbert, siblings: Ron (Nicky)
Nicholas of Pueblo, CO, Bill (Flora) Nicholas of Hollywood, MD and Kathy Herring of New Albany, IN.
His nieces and nephews include: Shannon Nicholas of Tucson, AZ, Mae Nicholas (Dan) Moorhead of
Larkspur, CO, Jeremy (Sophia) Nicholas of Castle Rock, CO, Nathan Nicholas of Castle Rock, CO, Jonathan
(Stephanie) Herring of New Albany, IN, Katie Nicholas of Hollywood, MD and Eric Herring (deceased).
Bob was the eldest of 4 siblings. Words cannot express how much love we had for him and how much
he will be missed. He was kind, easy to talk to and entertained us all with his storytelling. He never met
a stranger. Kids loved "Mr. Nick" and he loved kids. He spent his entire teaching career in St. Mary's
County, MD, first teaching 5th grade and then as an elementary PE teacher. While teaching, he was an
active member and officer of the Maryland State Education Association in St. Mary's County. He
volunteered for years as a softball coach for Parks and Recreation. When he retired, Parks and Rec
presented him with an award for longest running volunteer.
Bob was an adored uncle. When his nieces and nephews were younger, their eyes would light up when
Uncle Bob arrived. He cheered them on at their ball games and celebrated their accomplishments like
graduations. When the next generation of great nephews and great niece came along, he continued
showing up and delighting them with his presence. He was always positive and encouraging, especially
when it came to continuing their education or work accomplishments.
Bob was known for his one line and "dad" jokes (the same ones told over and over for years). If you
were on Bob's mailing list, you were not only the recipient of holiday cards, you got postcards from all
over the US and the world, a newspaper clipping of something you were interested in, thoughtful notes
just to say hi or to let you know he cared. After each visit to his siblings, nieces or nephews, you could
expect a wonderful thank you note or card filled with photos of the visit. He loved a good coupon and
had a regular schedule for catching his favorite spots for a lunch special or happy hour. He was loyal to
the Maryland Terrapins and to Sigma Chi. He was loyal to his friends and family and we will forever love
and miss him.
