Robert Niles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Funeral Home on Jan. 17, 2026.
Robert (Bob) Thomas Niles, 97, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Robert was born on June 25, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Harvey and Ann (Dolezal) Niles. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1949. During his service, he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. John R. Craig (DD-885). In recognition of his service, Bob was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the China Service Medal, and the Japanese Occupation Medal.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob returned to civilian life and began a long and dedicated career. He spent the majority of his working years with Haldy's Beauty and Barber Supply. It was there, in 1954, that he met Margaret. Their connection quickly grew, and the two were married a year later October 1, 1955, in Kahoka, Missouri. Their marriage was one of partnership, joy, and shared adventure, lasting through the generations.
Bob later went on to work for General Mills, from which he retired.
Bob was a devoted family man and a proud father. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; and five children; Carolyn Ann Northrup, Pamela Sharp, Robert Niles (Kathy), Steven Niles (Laurie), and Scott Niles (Crystal). His legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Bob loved spending time at Coralville Lake, where he could often be found camping, boating, playing in all-night volleyball matches, or hosting family gatherings filled with laughter and connection. He bowled in leagues for many years and was always ready to impress with a well-played game of pool.
Bob and Margaret shared a lifelong love of dancing, moving together from ballroom to swing as the years passed. They also enjoyed traveling, especially attending Bob's annual Navy reunions held in various locations, where he reconnected with fellow servicemen and shared stories from his time in the Navy.
For many years, Bob was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he found spiritual comfort and community.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Sr. and Anne; his siblings, Harvey Jr., Betty Lou, and Patricia; as well as two grandsons and one great-grandson.
Bob will be remembered for his honorable service, his deep love for family, and the many moments of joy he created-on the dance floor, by the lake, and in the lives of those who loved him.

Bob Niles consistently greeted me with warmth and affection during my visits to Iowa, and his friendly laughter was a cherished constant. He will be deeply missed, as both Bob and Margaret were integral to my experiences when returning home.
