Robert "Robbie" Nowlin

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Robert "Robbie" Nowlin, 87, of Effingham, who transitioned on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Mr. Robert "Robbie" Nowlin was born on August 22, 1938, in Florence County, South Carolina. He was the beloved son of the late Otis Nowlin, Sr. and Vivian E. Hawkins Nowlin. He peacefully departed this earthly life on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at MUSC Health Black River Medical Center in Williamsburg County, South Carolina.
Robert was a proud graduate of Wilson High School, Class of 1957. He received his vocational training through the Building and Construction Department at Wilson High School. He was employed with Kennedy Brick Masonry Company of Effingham, South Carolina, and later worked with Daniel Construction of Greenville, South Carolina, and C. B. Atkinson Construction of Lake City, South Carolina. In later years, Robert became an entrepreneur, founding the Nowlin Building and Construction Company, where he provided dedicated service throughout the Florence area.
At an early age, Robert united with Meadow Prong Baptist Church in Effingham, South Carolina, where he remained a faithful and active member for over sixty years. He served as a Trustee and as President of the church's Athletic Department. Under his leadership, the girls' softball and boys' baseball teams achieved great success. Robert also enjoyed sports personally and played baseball with the Long Branch Sluggers and the Effingham Braves. He was a proud member of Masonic Lodge #346.
Robert was also one of the founders of New Christian Fellowship Baptist Church of Effingham, South Carolina, where he served faithfully on the Deacon Board.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary H. Nowlin; his sister, Evageline McFadden; and his brother, James Nowlin.
Left to cherish his loving memories are his son, Randy Nowlin of Connecticut; his sisters: Ruby Lee Nowlin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Alease Nowlin of Connecticut; Lendora Nowlin of Effingham, South Carolina; Lucinda N. Cordy of Stone Mountain, Georgia; Eleanor N. (Henry) Backus of Florence, South Carolina; Abigail N. (Gregg) Crawford of Atlanta, Georgia; Bulah Mae Williams of Florence, South Carolina; and Gloria Dean Hicks of Florence, South Carolina.
He is also survived by his brothers: Thomas (Deloris) Nowlin of Effingham, South Carolina; Norman (Angie) Nowlin of Florence, South Carolina; Otis Nowlin, Jr. of Florence, South Carolina; Elijah Hicks of Florence, South Carolina; and Harry Hicks of Florence, South Carolina; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He will be especially remembered by his special friends, Sherman Smith of Florence, South Carolina, and Johnny Eagleton of Effingham, South Carolina.
