Robert H. Oglesby, Major, retired U.S. Army, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2023.
"Bob", "Bobby", "Papa Bob" was born in Portal, Georgia on March 21, 1930. He graduated from Rincon High School in 1946 and attended Armstrong Junior College. He joined the Army National Guard in his teens. After a number of years as an electrician at Union Bag, he went active duty as an Army officer. A combat veteran who served twice in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, Bob earned the Bronze Star, Air Medal for Valor, Army Commendation Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After Vietnam, he worked for Gulfstream. Upon retirement, he joined the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary where he volunteered for over 5,000 hours. He was a member of the American Legion Post 135 and served as Post Commander. With an outgoing, personable disposition, Bob loved, and was loved by every one he met.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Eunice S. Oglesby; parents, Warren and Cynthia Oglesby; and brother, Gene Oglesby.
He is survived by two brothers, Warren (Ann) Oglesby, and Joe (Kum Sun) Oglesby; four children, Mike Oglesby, Michelle (Maurice) Randrup, Melanie (Willie) Tuten, and Melissa (Dwayne) Hebert; four grandchildren, Adam (Lauren) Hebert, Beth (Chris) Hendley, Brittany (Michael) McNamara, and Ben (finance' Laney) Tuten; two great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews; step-children, Algie Varn, Ann (Richard) Buchannon, Jane Martin; four step granddaughters, including his devoted Sarah (Will) Redden.
Bob and Eunice both found great joy and fellowship singing in the choir at Montgomery Presbyterian Church. He was an avid carpentar and loved working in his yard. Most recently he could be found taking it easy, rocking on his porch.
A graveside service will be held 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2023 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia.
