Twenty years ago I have been in Paul Herbert Law center as a visiting Russian professor. That time was wonderful for me, first of all, meeting and discussing, sometimes with cup of coffee, different subjects with brilliant LSU Law Professor Emeritus Robert Anthony Pascal. Pascal presented me the text of his Tucker Lecture of 1998, Of the Civil Code and Us, few other works. Elegantly written and argued these works provoked the great inspiration to discover the style of outstanding author and thinker.
Today I saw with sadness that Robert A.Pascal passed away Jan. 19, 2018. R.I.P.

I spent a significant amount of time in the Center for Civil Law Studies in 2000 and 2001 as a 3L research assistant. Prof. Pascal was not only knowledgeable in almost every aspect of civilian tradition and comparative law that was under research but was incredibly kind and interested in matters not only of scholarship but professional and personal pursuits. The world mourns a stalwart of the civilian tradition in Louisiana.

Belatedly, I have learned of the death of my friend and former colleague. Bob was undoubtedly unique. In almost 50 years in the legal profession, I have never met anyone more devoted to the law and our legal system. As I borrowed from Shakespeare and wrote in the dedication of the Law Center Yearbook to Bob Pascal in 1981:
"A' t'was a man. Take him all in all. I shall not look upon his like again."

Professor Pascal was one of the true legends of LSU Law School. We law students were so intimidated by him , but he was so gracious to everyone one-on-one. He was completely devoted to legal scholarship. He thoroughly knew the Civil Code and taught us the moral basis of it. It was a privilege to have been in his class.

To the Pascal family, I hope knowing that you're in the thoughts and prayers of many bring a measure of comfort. We look forward to the time when all things that cause sickness and death will be eradicated by God's Kingdom. - Matthew 6:9-10

We became good friends after I graduated from LSU Law in 1991. I visited him often and talked and corresponded with him. A gentle and intelligent soul, who made many contributions to the law he loved.

A brilliant scholar and a genuine, nice person. I also feel honored to have had him as a professor and to have encountered him through the Law School beginning in 1964 through very recent times.

We pray for the soul of Robert A. Pascal, our friend and professor.
He had a very nice and unique life, and as he correctly said on the occasion of Dean Hebert's funeral, it is more in conformity with the plan of God's creation that we should celebrate his life.
He will be missed, yet remembered with a smile.

I was a freshman at Law School. Away from home, nervous, losing weight, scared as to whether I would flunk out. Professor Pascal called me to his office and asked "I am worried about you" He then told me the story of himself when he was a student in law school many years before and in a similar situation. Knowing that I had such an important faculty member concerned about me made all the difference in the world. What a man!

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Professor Pascal when I first started teaching at Loyola about 15 years ago. I asked him to read the first article I wrote on putative marriage and he invited me to come to Baton Rouge for lunch to give me comments about my work. He was so kind, sincere, concerned, and helpful. He sent me handwritten notes that I will cherish. I am so happy to have known him and to have experienced his brilliance.

Paul R. Baier, God bless Robert Anthony Pascal. I was his student in his Louisiana Civil Law System Course when I arrived as his colleague at the Law School. I visited him at his home the day before, or the day, he died. He was a good man, father, teacher, and my friend. PRB
