Robert Poirier Obituary

Robert "Bob" Poirier of Attleboro and Onset, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on February 28 at the age of 93. Bob was the son of the late William J. and Aurore E. (Chartier) Poirier and was preceded in death by his son, Timothy of Attleboro.

Born and raised in Attleboro, he attended Richardson Elementary and graduated from Attleboro High School in 1951. At AHS Bob was an outstanding athlete who competed in football, basketball and wrestling. As captain of the football team, his interception against North Attleboro sealed victory in the 1950 Thanksgiving game. Bob would go on to play for the University of Rhode Island and for the US Seventh Army in Germany. In 1975, he was inducted into the Greater Attleboro Football Hall of Fame.

Bob served his country as a corporal in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. A member of the US Seventh Army, he was stationed in Hanau, Germany. This afforded him the opportunity to travel, including trips to Paris and Sweden. Returning from Europe, he worked in the family business, Perry's Dairy. At this time he was an excellent amateur golfer and a medalist in the city tournament. He retired from the dairy business in 1980 to focus on managing his numerous rental properties in Attleboro. During this time, Bob also served his community as an Attleboro Fire Commissioner.

Bob's enormously active life was enriched by his deep devotion to family, friends and the community. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 71 years, Mary (Ahlquist), and his sons Michael (Suzanne) of Borrego Springs, California; Mark of Attleboro; Robert of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and James (Maria) of Rehoboth, as well as his 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, William E. Poirier of Laconia, New Hampshire.

Bob's infectious smile, positive attitude and willingness to help others made him friends wherever he went. In recent years, he would take long walks every day with his close friend Richard Oliver, followed by an obligatory stop at Dunkin Donuts.

A memorial service and interment at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne is planned for June; exact dates are yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, donorservices.alz.org

Bob and I lived in the same neighborhood in high school and played on the same AHS football team. He was a senior and I was a sophomore. He would pi give me a ride to the high school on game day, always stopping at St. Joseph's first to say a brief prayer. As you might expect, I looked up to him as a senior and a great ballplayer. My heartfelt condolences to Mary and the family.
