AIKEN - ROBERT EDWARD POPIEL, 94, beloved husband of Jane Dorger Popiel, passed away Sunday evening, June 30, 2024 in his home.
A native of Somerville, MA, Bob was a son of the late Edward E. and Mary Maher Popiel. He was a graduate of Northeastern University and worked in the electronics industry. His career was in component manufacturing and development. Bob was a senior engineer with Raytheon Company where he was a member of the company's NATO staff, touring Europe evaluating manufacturing missile components. He and Jane moved to Aiken in 2006 from West Palm Beach, FL. He formerly volunteered as a docent at the Aiken County Museum for 14 years. Bob was also an avid coin collector.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 45 years, Jane, include five children, Marianne Sakowski (Ray), Bartow, FL, Stephen Popiel, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Michelle Barows (Terry), Jasper, GA, Lisa Kuntzman (John), Palm Springs, FL, Scott Hosking (Angela), Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Crissy Espy (Jon), Sean Barows (Chynna), Ryan Barows (Emily), Emily Bunn (Chris), Madeline Hosking and thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra, and a grandson, Raymond Sakowski.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, July 6th beginning at 2 o'clock at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in Southlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Aiken County Historical Museum (achmfriends.org).
