Bob Poston was born in Statesville, North Carolina in 1931 and lived for many years in Elizabeth City. He spent his life in service to others. As a physician, he started and built Tarheel Internal Medicine. He was deeply loved by his patients, colleagues and co-workers across Northeastern and Western North Carolina. His greatest love was his family-his three sons, Robert (Loretta), Clark (Maggie) and Ty (Amy). He loved hunting and fishing, sharing his passion for the outdoors with his boys. From the oceans off Cape Hatteras to the Sounds of Currituck and Ocracoke, Bob explored them all with rod and gun in hand. Fishing was his passion; he loved time on the streams of North Carolina, tying his own flies to match the hatch. He also enjoyed traveling to New Zealand, Colorado, Montana, and throughout California with his wife of 30 years, Joanne. Together they shared a full and meaningful life, including many trips abroad.
Bob was a top student at Episcopal High School, Davidson College, and Duke University Medical School, earning many awards and the respect of peers and colleagues for his conscientious spirit and unwavering integrity. Bob exuded kindness and compassion in his nonjudgemental care for his patients. He generously shared his medical knowledge by serving as a preceptor to young physicians.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Dr. James Lewis Poston; his mother, Mildred Spencer; stepfather William Spencer, his brother, Bill Spencer; and his former wife, Jean.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his three sons; his sister, Emmie Field, his stepson, Dane Helding, and wife Leslie; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A private celebration of Dr. Poston's life will take place in the spring.
