Obituary for Robert Power
Robert Power, 83, passed away peacefully August 11th at Westchester Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing home in Mt. Vernon, NY. Prior to living In Mt. Vernon was a longtime Tuckahoe resident, living right up the road from the Crestwood train station.
Robert, also affectionately referred to by many as Uncle Robert, Uncle Bob, Bob and Bobby, was a jovial, lovable, handsome, flirty, musically inclined character! Robert would light up any room he was in- he loved people and was always singing to those around him. Robert's love and talent for music was one of his most defining traits and a major part of his life. Robert would jokingly say that he had "10,000 songs under his bed," original tunes which he would rehearse and record on cassette tapes. He was incredibly prolific, when he wasn't playing or writing songs, he was often jotting down notes in extensive journals that he kept. He was an adept musician, played the guitar, both acoustic and electric as well as the piano and harmonica. He was incredibly humble about his remarkable career in the music business, as he was in a band with Billy Vera, Al Esposito and R. Hinds in the 1960s, called Billy Vera and the Contrasts, having performed in numerous well-known clubs, venues and with notable artists of the time, performing on the same bill with Etta James, Billy Joel and Jimi Hendrix. He was not only a witness to this historic era or music, he was an integral and respected part of it.
Robert is predeceased by his Mother and Father, Frank and Brenda Power (nee Rawley), his sister and brother in law, Patricia and Dennis Corcoran and his brother Frank Power. He is survived by his siter in law, Kathleen Power, nieces and spouses; Loraine (nee Power) and Frank Kehoe, Karen Power and Brian Oakes, Brenda (nee Corcoran) and Chris Discala, his nephew and spouse, Frank and Renee Power as well as his many beloved great nieces and nephews, Caitlin, Lauren, Brendan, Tyler, Michael, Sean, Christopher (Topher), Grace, Aidan and Giada Mae.
Growing up, Robert contracted polio, at the young age of two and was left with permanent reminders that never deterred him- he was a great athlete and incredibly strong! He may have walked with a brace, but he never missed a beat. He loved going to the Eastchester music store in Tuckahoe almost every day to teach music to many children and patrons over the years. The customers adored him, many came into the shop, not necessarily because they needed to buy anything, but because seeing Bob, hearing his insights on music, the political scene or whatever else, was truly fascinating, engaging and uplifting. Anyone who lived in Tuckahoe fondly knew him as the guy walking up the big hill to the music store every day, whether snow, rain or shine.
Robert was also a very loyal and dear friend to many. He genuinely cared and listened sensitively and with great compassion. A heartfelt story that epitomizes the depths of Robert's kindness to his friends: Two of his closest friends, Jerry and Blue, had a baby 21 years ago, at Lawrence Hospital, in Bronxville, NY and Robert hopped on the train to be the very first visitor to meet the bouncing new baby! He loved his family and friends wholeheartedly and will be dearly missed.
