Robert William Powers, a long-time resident of
Rockville Centre, New York, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, the 23rd of September.
Born in 1962, Rob was a member of Holy Name Parish in Park Slope and remained an active member throughout college and beyond. He attended the parish grammar school, Holy Name, and enrolled at Bishop Ford High School where he excelled in track. In 1980, he entered Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he continued his love of sports, particularly track. It was at Marist that he met Maureen, his wife of 38 years.
Following college, Rob joined the NYC Police Department where he served for more than 20 years until he retired as Detective in 2006. After retiring from the police department, Rob worked in the private security industry for executives and high-profile clients. These positions afforded him the opportunity to utilize his expertise from his police work in Narcotic Surveillance and Investigative Tracking.
Rob had many interests and served on many committees, not only in the Police Department but in his community of Rockville Centre. A longtime member of the Atlantic Beach Club, he especially took pleasure in watching his children enjoy summers swimming in the surf amongst friends. Rob was an avid golfer and honed his golf skills in friendly competition with his wife, sons and beloved golf buddies at Hempstead Golf & Country Club. He especially loved playing in the Rockville Centre "Over 40" basketball league and cherished the friendships he made. A man of faith, he had a special devotion to Our Blessed Mother and was an active member of the Steven McDonald Men's Prayer Group in his home parish of St. Agnes Cathedral. His strength and humility in the way he approached his three year battle with cancer was an inspiration for all.
Rob is predeceased by his father, Jack Powers, and his sister-in-law, Valerie Powers. He is survived by his wife, Maureen (nee Tobin), and their children, Kenneth Powers, Connor Powers, Nora Powers and Maeve Powers, and their daughters-in-law, Devin Powers and Lauren Powers. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy Powers; his siblings, Patricia Pusz, Alfred Powers, John Powers, and Charles Powers; his brother-in-law Robert Pusz, and sisters-in-law, Teresa Powers and Virginia Powers.
Rob was a loving and gentle family man whose devotion to his family, faith and country were a beacon of light for those he met. He will be missed greatly. Donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (dogood.t2t.org) or the Pat Agresti Memorial Foundation (patagrestimemorialfoundation.com). Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Cathedral.
