Robert 'Butch' Pynnonen
Negaunee
Robert David 'Butch' Pynnonen, 94, lifelong Negaunee resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, April 23, 2025 at MediLodge in Munising.
Butch was born April 1, 1931 in Negaunee to David and Ida (Romo) Pynnonen and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1949. Following graduation, he honorably served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Midway from 1950-54 during the Korean War. Following his service to his country, Butch returned home and utilized the GI Bill to attain his teaching degree from Northern Michigan University. He married Joan Fassbender of Ishpeming and together they raised their two children in Negaunee.
Butch was employed by Cleveland Cliffs, working several different jobs and numerous locations, eventually retiring from the Mather 'B' as a safety engineer. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of VA Romo Post #3165, Negaunee VFW, and was former member of the Negaunee Elks. More than anything, Butch loved fishing and spending time at camp.
Surviving are his son, Jeff (Angela) Pynnonen of Copemish; his daughter, Jill (Marty) Madsen of Ishpeming; six grandchildren: Noel Sutherland, Trevor (Amanda), Nickolas (Taylor Jo Roman) and Tyler (Audra) Pynnonen, and Matthew (Rachel) and Mitchell (Amie) Matta; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty Ann (Jim) Schneider of Marquette; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Joan in 2019; and eight brothers and sisters.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at the Negaunee VFW from 3-4 PM with a service to follow at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Negaunee Senior Center in Butch's name.
