Robert Redling Obituary

Robert Thomas "Rob" Redling, Jr., age 80, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, in St. Augustine, Florida. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Rob lived a life marked by service, curiosity, and deep appreciation for the world around him.
Born on March 23, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Rob was raised in a large and loving family. He graduated from Bayonne High School and went on to earn his degree from Rutgers College in New Brunswick. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career in college publishing. Over the years, Rob worked with respected publishers including Random House, St. Martin's Press, and McGraw Hill Publishing. He thoroughly enjoyed his professional journey-especially the meaningful connections he formed with professors across the country.
Rob proudly served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the 44th Medical Brigade in Vietnam and later continued his service with several years in the New Jersey National Guard. His military experience remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.
In 1971, Rob married Kathleen (Ahrens) Redling and settled in Bricktown, NJ. Their marriage of 54 years was filled with love and partnership as they raised three children together: daughters Amy (Redling) Clark (Mike) and Kathryn "Kate" (Redling) Jett (Alex), and son David (Marlena). Rob found immense joy in being a grandfather to Audrey, Elizabeth "Libby," Conor, Brynn, and Paige-each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Family was central to Rob's life. He was one of eight siblings and is survived by Brian (Jenny), MaryAnn (Redling) Stachiw (Mike), Peter, Kathleen (Redling) Mooney (Neil), Timothy (Betty Ann), and Judy (Redling) Gaynor (Conor). Rob is also survived by former Sister-in-Law, Donna, who he loved dearly. He also cherished his relationships with his 17 nieces and nephews. Rob was predeceased by his parents, Robert T. Redling Sr. and Dorothy Mary (Kane) Redling, as well as his brother Kevin.
Rob had many passions that enriched his life and those around him. An avid photographer with a keen eye for beauty in nature and architecture alike, he captured countless moments that reflected his deep appreciation for the world's quiet wonders. After leaving Brick, NJ and moving to St. Augustine in 2002, a city he came to love dearly-Rob gave generously of his time as a volunteer at the St. Augustine Historical Society, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, and Memorial Presbyterian Church.
His fascination with history extended beyond local landmarks; Rob had a lifelong interest in military history and was especially drawn to Civil War studies. He visited every Civil War battlefield he could reach-each trip a testament to his dedication to understanding the past.
Rob's passion for music and film was all encompassing. Everything from Springsteen to Bocelli. Our yearly subscription to the then Garden State Arts Center were a special treat.
Even as health challenges arose later in life, Rob remained steadfastly kind-hearted and grateful-qualities that defined him throughout all seasons of life. His compassion for others never wavered; nor did his love for family and friends or appreciation for nature's beauty.
A Celebration of Rob's Life will be held in New Jersey during the spring or summer of 2026.
In honor of Rob's memory and service to others, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
May Robert Thomas "Rob" Redling Jr.'s memory bring comfort to all who knew him-and may we carry forward his legacy of kindness, curiosity, service, and love for family.
