Robert Viland (Rex) Rexrode, 98, passed away peacefully August 30, 2024. Rex was born on July 20, 1926 in Ottawa, Illinois to Perry Lee and Ruth Viola (Viland) Rexrode.
Rex married his high school sweetheart, Virgina Taylor, after returning from serving in the US Navy during World War II where he was a ship's radioman and learned Morse Code. (He could still spell out your name in code until he passed.) Rex and Virginia raised their family while living first in Greenbelt and shortly after in Adelphi, Maryland where he worked as a draftsman for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission for 30 years. He pitched for the Commission's fast pitch softball team almost until his retirement in 1976.
He retired to Fort Pierce, Florida where he enjoyed woodworking and fishing. Rex could often be found relaxing with his pipe and enjoyed his double Manhattan every evening.
Rex is survived by his sister, Joan, his sons, Bob (Patty), Gary and Richard (Karyn), daughter in law Nancy and grandchildren Jacqueline (David), Kelly (Giovanni), Jennifer (Joe), Jenny, David, Kevin and Jonathan. He was blessed with 9 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, his sisters Patricia and Joy, his son, Curtis, Gary's wife, Cheryl, and grandsons, Robert and Joshua.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Rex's name to Suntree United Methodist Church.
