Bob was a friend, mentor, and a colleague. Since I arrived here at UH in 2017, he always checked for my well being, constantly and selflessly supported my work and always helped to remove obstacles. It was never about him but about UH, our programs, our patients, and our teams. I will miss our monthly meetings Bob! God Bless You!!

The news of Bob's sudden passing is devastating. I had the opportunity to work alongside Bob over the course of a year during the pandemic through The Roe Green Center for Travel Medicine & Global Health. While we only worked together for a year, I quickly learned that Bob was a brilliant physician and researcher, and, more importantly, a genuinely kind and compassionate human being.
His unparalleled character was evident as he worked diligently to help Northeast Ohio and the country navigate the COVID pandemic (even though he never was one to seek out the limelight). I also very much enjoyed discussing all of the work he conducted across the world on the global health stage-- it was quite evident that Bob wanted to leave the world a better place and he undoubtedly accomplished that many times over.
While we only worked together a short time, Bob left a lasting impression on me and exemplified the type of character I hope to emulate as I progress in my career. He will be sorely missed.
My deepest condolences to the Salata family and all of Bob's loved ones.

I remain in disbelief that Dr. Salata has passed away. I had the honor to have worked with him for many years at UH. Dear Jody and the entire Salata family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Bob was an incredible human being. A true gem that is hard to find these days.
If anyone in the community struggled on grappling with a major life decision it was Bob who people first called to seek advice. And it was Bob and Jody who stopped everything they were doing to take the time to listen and give that reassuring advice.
Every time we saw Bob he always made sure to ask "how are the kids, Anna, Carlos, and Natalia?"
Please know we are thinking of you during this difficult time and will always remember Bob´s spirit with a smile. We will never forget Bob´s generosity and guidance. Sending lots of love,

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of the esteemed Dr. Salata, who was a mentor, friend, and guiding figure to us all. Dr. Salata played a crucial role in the success of the Advancing Clinical Therapeutics Globally (ACTG) Clinical Research Site at the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) in Kampala, Uganda. We valued his visits, which were always filled with insightful advice, practical solutions, and thoughtful gestures. He took the time to know and connect with each of member of the team. Dr. Salata´s absence will be profoundly felt, and he will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies go to Mrs. Salata, all members of the family, colleagues and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

We didn´t know Bob as our colleague or our doctor. He and Jody were our next-door neighbors for more than 20 years. Bob, like my husband, loved to mow his own lawn when he had time and work in his yard using lots of different power tools. I even teased him once that he might have missed his calling: orthopedic surgery. But Mike took care of that. And Bob and Jody were great hosts-food and drink aplenty and lots of interesting conversation.
Bob was generous with his time and medical help, too, when we asked him about Covid (like, every other day); when our daughter´s British boyfriend didn´t know what to do about an ugly boil; when I came down with pinkeye the day before we were leaving on vacation; when the fastest way to get a prescription for Paxlovid was from him rather than from our own docs. He just never hesitated. Total class, quiet fortitude, immense integrity, and so kind.
Gil and I volunteered for both the UH Pfizer Covid vaccine its mRNA flu vaccine trials. Not everyone jumped at the chance, but we would do anything in our small way for Bob and his hopes for medicine.
Bob married the most thoughtful, generous woman in the world, too. And we send warm condolences to Jody and their "boys," Chris, Mike, Drew and Matt. We know that having the love and support of each other and everyone else in their large family will help them cope with this most devastating pain.

Dr. Salata was my physician for 31 years. When I came to the ID Clinic at UH in 1993 I had full blown AIDS, numerous opportunistic infections and had been told that I would be lucky to live for very much longer. Luck might have had something to do with my survival, but mostly I needed Dr. Robert Salata.
Under Dr. Salata's care, I was nursed back to health numerous times over the decades from some very grave situations. I'm healthy enough now to have become a competitive swimmer and Dr. Salata seemed to relish when I showed him medals I'd won. They are a true testament to the level of health the doctor helped me achieve. I will be forever grateful that Dr. Salata and I teamed up to see me through the worst and best of my treatment.
But it's Dr. Salata's work in the field of HIV/AIDS that I will remember him most for. The idea that this wry, gentle, smart and courageous man gave relief to so many who were suffering is truly remarkable. He gave patients some much needed dignity in their lives and, at times, in their deaths. Through the research Dr. Salata conducted he will continue to bring hope to many generations of patients. Watching Dr. Salata relish in his teaching roll made me feel content that his gentle manner and expertise would be emulated by future healthcare workers. Knowing that Dr. Salata was giving this same quality of healthcare to everyone he treated around the
world made me feel lucky that I was in his care. The whole community mourns the loss of such an amazing physician.
Please accept my sincere condolences and deepest gratitude for having known Dr. Robert Salata.

Dr. Salata was known for his kindness and excellence in the CYO community. He coached CYO basketball for over 15 years and was known for his excellence and deep caring for all the children, including opponents and their coaches. When COVID hit he volunteered to advise CYO regarding what to do and how to safely operate with the well being of children front and center. His calm demeanor, clarity of thinking, and humility in those interactions made every conversation feel like we were equals and friends. I see that he treated everyone with similar kindness and humility. On Sept 22 Dr. Bob and his family will be enshrined as members of the 2024 Hall of Fame class. He was grateful and was looking forward to the celebration. He will be present in a different way now from a different place. Dr. Bob - thank you for using your life to give life, kindness, and hope to countless people. Your legacy is alive and well and will live on in CYO and around the world. You left us too soon. Greet our beloved and wait for us. Our prayers are with you and with your family and with people around the world who are saddened by your absence.

What a shock to hear this sad news; Nancy's and my hearts go out to Jody and their wonderful family. We were privileged to know Bob, Jody and their 4 boys when they were at UVa for Bob's fellowship in infectious diseases, working on amebiasis with our group as noted by Bill Petri. They lived near us in Charlottesville, where our families often connected. In addition to his impressive research and work in Global Health, Bob was always the consummate caring physician. We even enjoyed one of Bob's memorably delightful midwinter courses at Sanibel Island at his invitation to participate.
We join many who Bob and Jody made feel like family in our gratitude for his forever memorable model of kinship, excellence and caring.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy over the passing of Bob. I knew Bob as an ID fellow and Chief Resident and later through his leadership in Medicine. When he was an ID fellow here at the University of Virginia with Dick Guerrant and the late Jonathan Ravdin, Bob made fundamental discoveries of the role of innate immunity in defense against amebiasis, specifically the role of gamma interferon activation of neutrophils and macrophages. He and I never worked together except for my last week as a senior resident at Case when Bob became Chief Resident, but my interactions were as Bob Bonomo described, a kind man, leader and intellectually brilliant. His impact was large and legacy will be felt for generations.
Sincerely,
Bill

Dr. Salata was my fellowship director and the head of infectious disease at Case. He represented a master teacher/clinician that is no longer present today and that will be a big loss. He was kind, caring, compassionate, smart and a wonderful mentor. He certainly inspired me and countless others. He has taught and impressed upon so many that his legacy will live on not only through his family, colleagues, patients and students. I was honored he allowed me to train at Case and mentored me along the way and certainly has contributed to my career and life. He welcomed all of us as fellows into his home on countless occasions and really made us feel part of "the family". He will be missed ! My condolences to his family and patients. Sincerely, Jessica Kumar, MPH, DO

It is with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the loss of Bob. Not only was he an exceptional leader, but he also championed for his colleagues, mentees and our team. Bob held the position of Chair with distinction, earning the title of our "fearless leader", yet above all, he was a true and loyal friend. He always made time to stop by my office for a friendly conversation, inquiring about my family or how I was doing. The void left by his absence is truly profound. I will miss him dearly.

Thank you, Dr. Robert Salata, we were used to calling you Bob, for the many years that you supported the advancement of Science in our Institution at the Joint Clinical Research Centre, In Kampala Uganda. For the many of our Staff that you facilitated to get Masters and PhD Degrees at CWRU and who are now our leading scientists, for linkage on to numerous successful research Studies especially through the AIDS Clinical Trials Network, the support to our Institutional laboratory to acquire CAP accreditation, for the new collaborations and with other leading experts in HIV, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis and more recently in Cell therapy. Above all thank you for the enduring friendship of over 30 years and the numerous times we had dinner together and we were looking forward to meeting as usual in the last quarter of this year, but we were jolted by the sudden news of your passing yesterday. May your soul rest in peace.

Dr. Salata´s passing is a devastating loss to all who knew him. His commitment to global health, particularly in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa, was unmatched and truly inspiring. He had faith in people. He showed us a different model of engagement-one that built scientific partnerships and empowered local teams to tackle pressing health issues. His efforts to improve health outcomes through research left an indelible mark on all of us--on me in particular.
Though he is no longer with us, his legacy will continue to inspire us to carry on the work he started.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all his loved ones. His spirit and vision will forever guide us.

My heartfelt sympathy to Jody and all of Bob's family. Bob was an inspiration to me and an important mentor, longtime colleague and friend. I am deeply saddened by his passing. Warm, wise, gentle. More fitting adjectives could not be used. It was my pleasure and special privilege to call him Dr Salata, when he wished for everyone else to call him Bob.
