Robert "Eric" George Schoener, 76, of Thornwood, NY, passed away on Friday, December 22nd, 2023. Robert was born on January 17th, 1947 to William and Margaret (nee Stoveland) Schoener in New York, NY. After Robert graduated from Evander Childs High School in 1965, he went on to study physical education and play baseball at Hunter College in the Bronx, NY. After graduating with a degree in physical education, he started his first job at I.S. 123 James M. Kiernan School as a physical education teacher, kickstarting a 34 year career in education. He earned a Master's Degree from Lehman College and spent a majority of his career at I.S. 174 Eugene T Maleska School. In 1969, Robert met Mary through Mary's brother, Thomas. Robert and Mary went on to have 2 children, Robert and Jennifer, and were married for 51 memorable years. Robert attended Holy Innocence Parish in Pleasantville, NY for the past 15 years. In 2004, Robert retired and spent his time traveling, playing with his grandkids, enjoying good meals with friends and family, playing golf, and going to the beach. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Elizabeth Schoener (nee Slane), his two children Robert (Heather) Schoener, Jennifer (Damien) Mc Nickle, and 5 grandchildren, Abigeal, Emma, Finn, Meghan, and Cian. Visitation will be held at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home at 21 W Stevens Avenue in Hawthorne, NY on Wednesday, December 27th from 4 - 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Cavalry Hospital, both organizations Robert felt strongly about.
