Robert "Craig" Schwabauer, age 60 of Carbondale, Illinois, passed away on January 28, 2026.

Born in Galesburg, IL, to his mother Judith Schwabauer, née Hawkinson, he spent his life rooted in the places he loved most: Galesburg, Colorado, and Southern Illinois, forming deep connections wherever he lived.

Craig proudly served in the United States Air Force. He later attended Southern Illinois University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Microbiology. He had a lifelong curiosity, enjoying science and learning. Craig was always interested in understanding how things worked. He embraced adventure and loved the outdoors, whether fishing, camping, or exploring new places.

Craig's personality was unmistakably his own. Known for his elaborate storytelling and sharp wit, he often approached life with humor and spontaneity-sometimes leaving everyday decisions up to the roll of a die, just to keep things interesting. Family gatherings with Craig were filled with stories around campfires, competitive card games, playful jokes, and a good game of pool, a pastime at which he was notably skilled. His great sense of humor made time spent with him memorable and often filled with joyous laughter. He had a gift for turning ordinary moments into memories everyone would talk about for years. A devoted Denver Broncos football fan, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Craig also loved singing along with Neil Diamond, a soundtrack to many of his greatest moments in life.

Craig's proudest role was being a dad to his "Sweet Pea." He was always coming up with creative ways of making Jordan laugh, finding his greatest happiness in her joy. Her career in nursing, rooted in science, reflected not only her commitment to service but the intellect and scientific mind they shared. He was endlessly proud of the woman she became and her many accomplishments, like completing an accelerated nursing program with remarkable dedication.

Craig was deeply grateful for the unwavering presence of his cousins, who stood by him with remarkable dependability throughout his life-Jimmy, Susan, Bobby, and Barb. They were a constant source of support, offering loyalty and stability whenever he needed it. He knew that he could always count on them, valuing their devotion and the steady role they played in his life.

Craig's family extended well beyond the traditional. His chosen family included Laura Myers, Jordan's mother and a close friend; Jake and Justin, Jordan's brothers, who were like sons to him; and Laura Johnson, a former partner and dear friend, who consistently held space for him with compassion, patience, and understanding. He was deeply grateful for his "angel" and friend, Joan Steele, who lovingly assisted in his care when he needed it most.

He shared a special bond with his dogs, Shiloh and Jett Boy. He lovingly called them his best pals. At times, he took better care of them than he did of himself, making sure they were always safe, loved, and cared for. They were constantly by his side, offering companionship no matter what life brought his way. To him, they were not just pets, but family-steadfast friends who filled his life with comfort, purpose, and unconditional love.

Craig is survived by his beloved daughter, Jordan Schwabauer (Will Satler), of whom he was immensely proud and whose accomplishments brought him great joy, his sister, Stephanie Schwabauer-Brown (Joe Brown), and his nephews, Diego, Marcos, and Xavier. He is also survived by his father, Nile Schwabauer, and his cousins, Jim Hawkinson (Susan), Bob Hawkinson (Barb), Becca Hawkinson, and their families. He is also survived by his best pal Jett Boy, his loyal dog.

Craig was preceded in death by his grandfather, Papa Robert J. Hawkinson, his role model; his grandmother, Nana Ethel J. Hawkinson, née Hitchens, his biggest fan; his mother, Judith Schwabauer, whose love for him was unconditional; his aunt, Mary K. Hubbell ("KK"); his uncle, David Charles Hawkinson; his sister, Kim Lanc; and his constant companion Shiloh, his beloved dog.

A Celebration of Craig's Life will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Meredith Funeral Home with Pastor Karen Knodt officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00pm until the time of service on Saturday.
