Bob joined the United States Navy on June 27, 1950 at the age of 15 and retired March 28, 1995, as a reservist, at the age of 60 as a Hull Maintenance Technician First Class after having served faithfully for 45 years. Bob was very proud of his service to the United States Navy which also allowed a man to travel the world when he was young. Bob also had his own flooring business during the late sixties and early seventies after retiring from active duty in the Navy. He is also retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked as an inspector.
Bob was the Commander of the American Legion and VFW York chapters for several years, served as an auxiliary member of the Eliot Police Department and was also a private detective for many years.
When his children were young, he loved to take them camping in the State of Maine and took a cross country trip with them in 1973 where they started in Maine travelled down to Virginia across the Blue Ridge Mountains to Tennessee and Arkansas. They made it to Texas where they took a side trip with their cousins to Oklahoma and camped in the middle of a buffalo herd during mating season. They then travelled across to the Rocky Mountains and stood at the corners of four states Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Off to the west coast and a trip to Disney Land in California, through the sequoias and then San Francisco, up to Oregon, across Idaho, Montana, South Dakota into Chicago Illinois and then Michigan, back through Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and home.
Bob loved sailing and had many sailboats over his life time as well as a avid hunter and motorcyclist. He built all the homes that he lived in.
Bob lived a long life on his own terms and remained in his own home under his own care until December 29, 2025.
We are planning to charter a boat this summer to spread Bob's ashes at sea where he can rest in peace in a place he loved most.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to any Veteran's organization as serving the United States military was Bob's greatest passion.
