Robert L. "Bob" Smith, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and passionate musician, passed away on November 26, 2024, after a long illness, in the comfort of his home in Hyde Park, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob's journey began in the heart of Boston, where he was born in June 5, 1943. He graduated Dorchester High School and a few years later answered the call of duty and joined the Navy, serving a tour in Vietnam. His service was a testament to his patriotism and character. Bob's return home was bittersweet, as he transferred to the Naval Reserve following the passing of his mother. Determined to further his education, he utilized the GI Bill to earn an Associate's degree in Business from Newbury Jr College, setting a foundation for his future endeavors.
Bob's professional life was marked by a lengthy career at Massport, where he retired as a Chief Agent in the Ground Transportation Unit. His work ethic and leadership were recognized by all who worked alongside him. But it was his life outside of work that truly defined him.
Music was the melody of Bob's life; he played the guitar with a passion that was infectious. In his youth, he was a member of several bands, and throughout his life, he continued to strum his guitar for friends and family, filling his home with music and warmth. Bob's other pleasures were simple yet profound: fishing, cooking, and coin collecting. He was an avid Boston sports fan, who thoroughly enjoyed all four professional sports.
Bob's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife of 50 years, Kathleen Smith (O'Brien), and their loving children: Robert L. Smith Jr and his wife Teri of Houston, Texas, Daniel J. Smith of Quincy, Aimee L. Smith of Middleboro, James E. Smith of Hyde Park, and he holds dear the memory of his late son, Ryan L. Smith. He was a cherished brother of the late Kathaleen Dickey, and brother of William L. Smith of Virginia. Bob's life was further enriched by his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends, all of whom will miss him deeply.
As we bid farewell to Robert L. "Bob" Smith, we reflect on a life well-lived, a life filled with love, service, and the sweet strumming of a guitar. Bob's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
