BLACK RIVER -- 1SG Robert W. Smith, US Army (Ret.), 63, 30944 Burnup Rd., formerly of Champion, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, December 4, 2024.
Robert was born in Gardiner, Maine on October 19, 1961, the son of the late Malcolm K. Smith, Sr. and June Lane Smith. He graduated from Gardiner High School with the Class of 1979. He then worked for construction for 4 years at Maine Drilling & Blasting in Gardiner, before enlisting in the United States Army in 1983.
His career in the US Military brought him to many places around the globe, including service in Alaska, Tennessee & New York. He served many deployments overseas to Kosovo and Afghanistan. He earned several commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal. After 22 years, Robert retired from active duty in 2005.
He then continued to work for the Army as a civilian contractor with L3 Communications. He was currently working as the Maintenance Director for Bernier, Carr & Associates in Watertown.
He was an avid outdoorsman and quite social, he enjoyed his time on his boat, camping, hunting, snowmobiling, and many other activities. He was a member of the American Legion Bassett-Baxter Post #789, Carthage, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dionne-Rumble Post #7227, Carthage as well as the Carthage Elks Lodge BPOE #1762.
He is survived by his daughters, Alex Smith, New York, NY, Alex Carter, Lowville, NY and Jen Jenkins, Gastonia, NC and his 3 grandchildren Chase, Stella & Ava. Also surviving are his brother, Gary Smith; his sisters, Patti Cross and Valerie LaJoie; along with several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Malcolm K. Smith, Jr.
Calling Hours for Robert will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. 500 State St., Carthage. Memorial services from the VFW, American Legion, and Elks will begin at 3 PM concluding with Military Honors from the US Army. A celebration of life will follow at 4 PM at the Carthage Elks Lodge, 511 Fulton St., Carthage.
The family has asked that any monetary donations be made out to the T.F. Wright Foundation C/O, Northern NY Community Foundation, Located at 131 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601.
