Robert Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Winthrop on Dec. 27, 2025.
WINTHROP - Robert W. Smith, 91, of Winthrop, died December 23, 2025, in his home after a long illness. He was born in Readfield, Maine to Donald C. Smith and Phyllis A. (Merrill) Fogg on August 14, 1934. He is survived by his loving wife Carmen R (Levesque) Smith; daughter Cathy (Cindy) of Omaha, NE; son Mark (Terri) of Winslow; daughter Valerie of Winthrop; granddaughter Jessica Peasak (Tyler) of West Virginia, and his great granddaughters, nieces and nephews.

Bob graduated from Cony High School in 1954 and joined the US Air Force that same year. In 1955 Bob married Carmen, the love of his life, in Augusta Maine. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary October of this year. Bob joined the USAF in 1954 and worked as a hydraulic specialist on a variety of aircraft. He served tours of duty in both Vietnam and Thailand. During his last USAF assignment, he traveled the world as a member of the MSET Team. Bob retired as a Chief Master Sergeant after a 27-year career and was subsequently recruited for Northrop Grumman's B-2 program in California and later at Whiteman AFB in Missouri. He also worked for a brief period on the space shuttle program with Rockwell before returning to Northrop. Bob retired for the second time in 1997 and returned to Winthrop, Maine.

Bob embraced a number of hobbies over the years, including water skiing, skin diving, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was a lifelong golfer and, upon retirement, enjoyed golfing with his childhood friends Buddy and Teddy Ware. He also spent many winters cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Bob had a keen curiosity for understanding how things worked, and once something caught his interest, he learned everything he could on the topic. He never lost his love for automobiles and took pride in restoring and maintaining his vehicles to showroom quality. And, like many Maine men of his age, he never met a handyman project that he couldn't fix.

Bob's family will miss his dry wit, his love for dry wine, fine scotch, and good food, and especially his love for us. We would like to thank the MaineGeneral Hospice team for their support during the past few months, and our neighbors Jennifer McConnell and Brodie Dyer for their willingness to help us keep Bob comfortable at home.

Visitation will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, Maine, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 am at the same location. A military committal service will be held in the spring.

We encourage all who knew Bob to visit his memorial page at www.khrfuneralhomes.com where you can share memories, stories and upload photos as we collectively celebrate and remember the remarkable life of Robert "Bob" Walter Smith.
